New Model Army in .44 (Remington Replica) or 1860 Army .44 (Colt Replica).

However, I would check to see what feels good in your hands. The NMA and 1860 have different grip shapes. I like the NMA but hate the grip, while I like the handle of the 1860 but it feels a tad muzzle long.

However, any way you want to go, it will be fun. I'm just a tad picky. :D

The Doc is out now.

ShipChief--have & enjoy the Bates-Cumpston book. My 2nd gen Colt '51 works just fine and of course hits very high at 25 yards. Hesitate to take my Dremel to the hammer notch, don't want to chance messing up such a fine gun. Oh, yeah, and my elderly Navy Arms brass frame .36 shoots well. Just added another foot or so to the front sight, we'll see how that affects POA

Monday Night indoor--Indoor!!--black powder shooting has just started here at Detroit Sportsmens Congress. Think I'll use my Nasty Large Inauthentic Ruger that works + hits.

that's a fantastic price for a steel framed gun by the way.And if you decide BP isn't for you,you can pick up an R&D conversion cylinder and shoot .45 Colt.

OlMontanaBoy--logged on to Cabelas & almost ordered one. Their reviews sounded good to me -- mainly the part about hitting POA -- unfortunately Cabelas seems to want some notarized information verification form from us foreigners from Michigan. I have not yet succeeded in getting through to The Powers That Be to ask why. So its back to dixiegunworks or other more enlightened suppliers. Or locate & pay a notary. I don't care to do that, thank you.

It's very likely your bank provides a free notary service for their account holders. Never known a bank or credit union that didn't.

Cabelas has decided to make up their own laws, or have inadequate information on laws, for Michigan residents.

I am not inclined to shop where I am discriminated against because of my state of residence.

I may send them what I sent you, Mykeal, but have little expectation of influencing them. Perhaps some Michigan lawyer reading this may take up the challange. I am tired of it.

Yea Dixie! Yea Cimarron! Yea Cherry's Fine Guns! and many others.

Cabela's has a retail store in Michigan, just off US-23 in Dundee. I'm very surprised that, since they sell bp guns in Michigan, that they don't know the laws in Michigan. Now, I've never purchased a gun at that store so I don't know what procedures they use; perhaps someone else here on the forum may have.

Gosh I stopped at Cabelas in Hamburg PA yesterday, and didn't see any black powder pistols anywhere.

I really like the look of the colt style open tops, but for some reason, it seems easier to clean a revolver with a top strap. Maybe just me, but seems so.

Cabela's in Dundee, MI has sold me several BP guns, both long and short, without any hassles.

I have also dealt with their " Catalog Gun Department " for online sales about the VOI requirement. I will say that they were very accommodating and the issue was resolved to my satisfaction. If you want to discuss it in more detail just open up a new thread so as not to hijack this one.

I rethought my initial enthusiasm for Cabelas sale, which was based on 1. low price 2. enthusiastic reviews on C's web side, though a couple were otherwise.
So I looked closer at two from Dixie, their Remington Army "Shooters" Revolver RH0135 $675, and Dixie Remington NM Army Rev. SS1173 $600. Both are by Pietta, which maker seems better thought of where Remingtons are concerned.
The discriptions of the two look pretty much alike to me, so I asked Dixie

"What is the difference between:
RH0135 Remington Army "Shooters" Revolver $675
&
SS1173 Dixie Remington New Model Army Revolver $600
Your website says they both won the gold at Toronto 1987 and Pforzheim in
1989 Does SS1173 also have a dovetailed front sight?"

Dixie's reply was:

"The SS1173 has a brass triggerguard and the RH0135 has a silver plated
triggerguard. The SS1173 doesn't line up as well (barrel to cylinder
chamber) as the RH0135.
Sights are the same."

I suspect that I, being a rather impatient s.o.b. uninterested in basement gunsmithing, would be a lot happier spending the extra $400-something on the "Shooters" revolver. I already have two revolvers that won't (revolve), would like to have something both functional (ROA) and authentic.Must have a discussion with my checkbook.
