Seems kind of steep to me for a used 686, even one in really good condition. On the other hand, the fact that it is a 3", pre-lock model might make it worth the $750.00 or even more. I'm sure somebody better qualified than me regarding current values of older 686s will come along before too long.

I know of a nice 4 inch Colt Diamondback for $550.00

You didn't get a great deal but, when you go to sell it on the open market some day you may have found you got a pretty good deal.
I have seen 686 3 inch CS-1 on Guns America for over $1000. Did someone pay that much? I don't know.
Janet Reno had roughly half of them destroyed. You have one of approximately 1500 that are left on the planet. 3 inchers were for the suits and four inchers for the uniforms.
I have one, I shoot it. They are extremely well balanced.
If I ran into that deal I would have bought it (two is better than one) for an investment.
Did you get the box and papers?
I'll find the rest of the history for you in my archives and post it. BTW I paid 275 a year ago, but it was a family deal.
The finish is beadblast and the grips are Pachmayr's.
When I picked mine up a couple of years ago this was what was shared with me:
I found one of those too. Smithnut told me that the "2M" mark means it's had the bushing modification, and been checked two times. Apparently there were guns modded, and some still in service, so S&W sent armorers to Glynco, and ran all the CS-1's through to make sure.
I paid $475 out the door, the dealer was unaware of the CS-1. In this forums classifieds, one went for $1100 recently, like mine it was LNIB with original box and docs. They have gone for $850 within the last year as well.
IIRC Smithnut said there were 3000 3" CS-1's made. Janet Reno destroyed around 1500 of them. Buy it and hang onto it. They won't make any more like that. A 3" 686 is a nice revolver to have. Mine shoots nice (a little low with WWB). If nothing else, they make great trade bait. Enjoy your CS-1. Regards 18DAI.

I would give $750.0 for it in a heartbeat.
I have 8 or so S&W .357 revolvers in 3 inch...
They are tough to find,and not so many were made...Those that were,are now mostly in the hands of collectors,and not coming out of those collections anytime soon....I'd say grab it up,You'll be glad You did.

From the picture, that looks like it is in mint condition.
The "CS" is a very desirable variant of the 686. If i were presented with the same opportunity, I'd buy it.

Very pleasant to shoot. I have introduced a few folks to shooting revolvers with this mine. Starting out with .38 spl it's like shooting a .22 being an L Frame. The graduating to +P. I found both SA and DA trigger to be outstanding.
These things were designed for the full weight .357 loads it and handles them with finesse.
I put a set of Hogue Monogrips on just for the heck of it. It rocks. Do 6 full house as fast as you can.

Several months back, I bought my 627 Pro, a 4" 8-shot .357M N-frame, for $719. They had another one at the same price in the same pusher's display case the last time I was in there (10 days). Their 686 SSR was the same price, too. Believe me, they are better buys.

Yep, that is NOT a run of the mill 686. I would have grabbed it. Even if it wasn't a CS-3, and was just a regular 3" 686, it is still not a bad price. Heck, a new 3" 686 with the lock will cost almost that, and I'd much rather have the collectible no-lock version!
