My son is a turret gunner on one of the armored trucks when he is not on foot missions. He called today, made my day for sure, whenever I see the weird 6 didget phone number pop up on the cell phone I am thrilled to know my boy is still with us. He has aquired quite an assortment of firearms since his deployment. He is the top guy in Charlie Co. with the 50cal and 240B 7.62 mg. When they cannot use the 50 because of overpenetration the 7.62 is used. He has an M4 for quick over the side of the truck threats and as a machine gunner he carries a 9mm 92 in a chest holster. Now the mossberg. I laughed cause I told him when he was deployed he needed a shotgun for backup in that turret. He said his squad finally got a designated sniper who shoots the Barrett 50. I asked him if the new sarge could hit anything with it. He said the guy was from Arkansas. (meaning that he was obviously a good shot) Remember our guys that are defending us. I can vouch for one that I raised who will never be the same man that left us last year. Thank you Vets.

Thank your son for me, if you would, sir. I heard from a turret gunner in a Hummer who had 4 long guns and a 9mm in that turret with him, no going back to base for one if you REALLY really need one!

I think it is a good thing because I remember when we where denied armor for our hummers, let alone sidearms.

Yeah, I was a driver/gunner ( depending on the day ) for a tour in Iraq, had the 240 bravo and my M4

Funny thing is. The entire company had only two M9's in the arms room.

yeah we are, but we don't like to brag ;) I got friends in Afganland as well, love our guys in uniform and will put quick prayer of protection over your son.

Thanks to you and your son, one of mine did some time in the turret as well, he kept his M4/203 with him. They weren't allowed the M2 or MK19 because it was too threatening and could cause to much damage at the time so the primary weapon was the 204. Crazy ROE and restrictions at times. Keeping all those brave men and women in my prayers.
My other son hopes to be flying CAS in a couple yrs.

I was a turret gunner in an MATV last year in Afghanistan. I was happy to have an M240B on my turret because it's so much faster to get on target than the MK19 or M2. I never liked having a rifle up in the turret with me because of the dust, but either my M4A1 or later my M14 DMR was within reach below if needed, and of course I had an M9A1 (new Beretta, calm down Steyr fans) on my thigh.

Hope your boy stays safe. At least you know he's got the tools necessary to protect himself and his brothers when/if the time should come.

Tell him thank you for me, I may join the service after college, currently I am in Civil Air Patrol and I completely understand and appreciate his and your sacrifice to our country.

They did that because of the inherent fear a handgun produced in the Iraqi population.

Saddam performed public executions with handguns.

My unit in Iraq (1/87, 10MTN)would only issue M9's to those with inherent authority (such as the 1SG and CO) because the populace listened to whoever had one.

Isn't sociological tampering amazing?

So true, and funny. There were times that people wouldn't get themselves or their cars out of my vehicle's way even if my gunner was pointing a 240b or m2 at their face. As soon as I opened the TC's door and pulled out the good old M9 they soiled themselves and moved with a purpose.

Tell your son thanks from another Afghan deployed parent.....wasn't aware of the shotguns, but maybe he could find a few of these laying around.

anyone remember the grease guns they use to issue to tankers and combat engeeners

M3, M3A1 "Grease gun". .45ACP blow-back submachine gun. Introduced during WWII by America, as a cheaper and easier to manufacture alternative to the costly and slow to manufacture M1, M1A1 Thompson SMG.

The M3 SMG was kept in service into the 1990's, being issued to tankers and other personnel who required a handy and compact short-range defensive arm superior to a pistol.

It was phased out of most active unit's TO&E's after the 1990's. I dunno if any are still in any Army armories, though I do not doubt it (stuff gets forgotten sometimes).

Tell your son thanks from a former Marine. My son is a current Marine in a HiMars (MLRS) unit. He is deploying in January, and I fully expect him to have an arsenal beside him. He is an accomplished IDPA shooter; I only wish I could send him his USP for use over there.

Your son has my prayers and smoke sent for his safe and joyous return.

My dept had a 3 digit Thompson and a Grease gun as well as a few other toys that I got to play with.

Now we just have the typical M-4' and HK MP-5's,but we are T&E ing a "corner shot" from IMI and it is kinda cool.

Thank you so much gentlemen. My own family does not want to hear and does not understand...and here you guys that I do not know...do understand. Thanks and God Bless you and yours. Chuck
