I went to a small Eastern engineering college, and graduated in 2002. This story happened my junior year. Guns were prohibited in the dorms. However, I know that several students kept their trap shotguns in the dorms. None of these guns was used defensively in the time I was there, and they never were used to hurt anyone either.

There was one place, however, where a gun made a difference.

The dorms on that side of campus adjoin kind of a bad area, and a homeless man / derelict managed to get in to the women's dorm. He was angry over some imagined slight, and was running around the halls with a knife screaming about "cutting" someone. The dorm went into "lockdown", and campus security and the police were called. The guy with the knife continued to roam the halls with his knife.

The police still hadn't arrived when an RA stepped out of her room with an old double-barrel 12 gauge shotgun. She pointed it at his chest and yelled "GET THE ^%$( out of MY DORM, MOTHER%^$*#R!!!" He went :what: and ran.

The police arrived at the front door as the guy was leaving a vapor trail out the BACK door, so they never caught him. The shotgun was never mentioned in the incident report. "I dunno, I just yelled at him and he ran". :D

I have met the RA in question. This story is true to the best of my knowledge.

One the many unsung defensive uses every year. And the libbys don't even wonder why crime shot up in the UK after the ban.....

I thought it was the duty of all law abiding students to be victims while attending schools, colleges, and universities.

He didn't just take it from her and use it on her like the antis claim?

That's a good story. Probably good she didn't mention it to the Police. An acquaintance of mine got expelled for having a gun in the dorms after showing it to a group of "friends" at a party.
I learned to just keep my mouth shut. Nobody needs to know.

RA = Resident Assistant

Generally just a person in the dorm to help students out, keep people safe, act as an ombudsman between students and the university admin, etc.

Generally, they're the "responsible" people. In this case, she may have saved someone's life.

Here at U of Akron they also help organize dorm get togethers and events, as well as being a sort of 'property manager lite'.

They get free housing in exchange.

I love to read a report like that. She stepped up and defended...the WHOLE dorm. Thats a woman!

Every month, when my NRA magazine comes, I go to the "Armed Citizen" column. They have six or eight reports, reprinted from news papers, of self defense action taken by us "average" citizens.

Too bad the way things are. Stay ready.

Mark.

Fair?

That certainly wasn't very fair or egalitarian of her.

Shame.

Proportionate use of force and all that.

The British could teach her a thing or two.
