The goal of the conference [convened by The Peregrine Fund] is to promote a
better understanding of ingested spent lead ammunition as a source of lead
exposure and to reduce its effect on wildlife and humans.
Justification: evidence of the effects of lead on human health has led to
large scale restrictions on its use in the United States, including the
prohibition of lead in gasoline and paint. Bald Eagle consumption of
contaminated ducks and geese contributed to the 1991 ban on lead shot for
waterfowl hunting. Recent evidence of lead exposure in arctic subsistence
hunters, who continue to use lead shot, suggests that the ban on behalf of
eagles in the US may have benefited humans as well. Lead ammunition is
still used in America for hunting game other than waterfowl, and the extent
to which lead is secondarily ingested by wildlife and humans has been the
subject of recent investigation. This conference brings together experts in
the fields of human health and wildlife to consolidate this knowledge and
explore the potential health hazard of game hunted with lead bullets, which
may be significant in some sectors of society.

As many as 80 contributed papers and posters are expected to provide new
empirical data on this subject. The conference will conclude with an expert
panel discussion of research needs, and appropriate responses to control
lead exposure from spent lead ammunition.
