I went to my local Academy Sport today to pick up few items i needed for the range session. I went and check out some AR15. I fell in love with the S&W MP15. I was ready to purchase the sucker. So the guy handed me few paper to fill out while he went to the back. Next thing i know he was packing the gun on the rack to sell to me. I was like wait a minute waht happen to the brand new one in the back? Apprently this is their last one and they did not tell me this before i made my decision. So i told the guy, you expect me to pay full price for a display item? He said, Academy does not give discount on gun. I was so irritated by this point so i told the guy to pack it up and rip up the paper work. Is this normal so sporting goods store not to give discount on gun?

Unless it was a used gun why would you expect just because it was in a rack to get a "discount"? Is a brand new gun worth less just because it is in a rack and maybe someone has touched it? I think not.

Now if it has been shot, then yes, but not just because it is in a rack instead of a box. Although why a salesman would blow a sale by not giving you the one in the box is slightly odd...

Yes it is because it is not a used gun..... It has never been purchased nor fired by an individual. That is one reason for the gun locks so no one can monkey (and test the trigger) on a gun. For that matter you don't know really how many people played with or monkeyed with a so called NIB firearm.

Make what decision? Did you want the gun or not?

I had one time when I bought a pistol and was VERY impressed with the one in the display case. The sales person told me that he would get one from the back room. I said "I really like the trigger on this one." and he said "I'll bring out the other one and you take the one you want." Both of us were happy.

If you didn't like the one you were handling, why would you consider purchasing it? If it had obvious wear, scratches, or dings, I can see wanting one out of the back room. If not, the one in your hand was what you made a purchase decision on.

Why is that a problem? :scrutiny:

Even when you buy from a box store they will occasionally take a firearm off of the wall and put it in a box. What's the big deal, it's not like the weapon has had a 1,000 rounds down the pipe and even if it did what's a 1,000 rounds? in a modern firearm? If you want it buy it, if not apologize for taking up the guys time.

That is normal. The gun is new. Many retail stores don't keep a large stock of AR type rifles* so it's very possible that was the only one and if it wheren't out where you'd see it, well you get the picture.

*note: They probably don't sale as many ARs or "expensive" rifles a week as they do "cheaper" bolt guns and shotguns. So space is dedicated to faster moving inventory since I'm sure all their firearms takes roughly the same time to replenish.

I didn't ask for a discount and i dont need a discount. I am willing to spend over a thousand dollar, couple bucks doen'st mean much at this point of time. But my point here is why didn't he tell me it was the last one until to moment i sign the paper. I dont know about everyon else but when i buy something i call NEW i expect it to come from a box that the manufacture shift it in. Just like a pair of shoe, you would not bring home a pair on display and call it BRAND NEW SHOE.

I just bought a Glock 19 and a Marlin 336 from Academy. I have nothing but Two Thumbs up on the experience. The manager matched the price of the 336 to the old price of $329. The sales guy, although confused, retrieved a different glock from the safe and sure enough it did NOT have the slight nose curl like the display which made me one happy camper. I appreciate his patience.

Every gun store I buy from, Ganders, Cabellas, Academy, Sportsmens (till they left Texas) as well as my favorite The Bullet Trap in Plano, all sell you the gun you are holding. Not so sure why you got upset and left.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one. When I buy a gun I usually opt for the one I'm looking at as opposed to one from the back. Although when I get one from the back, I still want to handle it and visually inspect it prior to paying. My stand is if the display was enough to make you want to buy it, why balk when it is the last one?

Most shops I frequent don't have a "back room"
The one you're playing with is the one you get.

The only time I want one "from the back" is if I ask for it. I generally want the one I just handled. Sportsman's Warehouse will actually pull one from the back if they have it when you choose a firearm. My inclination is to just give them the nod and take it, but it is a very easy way to buy a gun that something is wrong with if you don't check it out carefully before buying it. There are no returns.

A couple of years ago I bought a new 41 mag Smith Mountain Gun. I had been looking for one. It had a pretty strong cylinder ring. I still bought it as I was planning on shooting it a lot anyway and my shooting would cause a ring too. Speaking of these 41 mags, I just saw another new one at a local gun store. Where do they find these things?

As far as Academy goes, I've only been in their stores a couple of times. I believe the nearest store is probably Birmingham AL and I'm certainly not just going to cuise down there to visit Academy Sports. Prices did not particularly impress me.

You obviously liked the gun you examined, so what is the problem? Was the gun damaged in some manner? Probably not. You asked to see the gun, said you wanted to purchase it, and the clerk tried to make that happen for you.

I don't know of any gun shops or sporting goods stores that give a discount on a gun because it has been on display.

When I bought my Bushmaster it was the one they had on the display rack. It was obviously new because its insides were still covered with the stinky preservative oil it was shipped with. No doubt it might have been handled by a number of people but never fired. That didn't really bother me at all. In fact the gun was the last one they had of the ARs -- it just happened to be the type I was looking for.

Thumbs up to academy. The guy working the gun counter at my local one is suprisingly knowledgeable for a store of that type.

As for your "new" rifle, it's not like every customer that came into the store shot that one or something.

It's not like you're buying a display TV that's been on for 5,000 hours. The display guns have never been fired and only casually caressed by other customers. Every time I've bought a gun the one on display IS the one I'm buying.

I would only ask for/expect a discount if it were shop worn, that is had scratches, dents, dings from being handled.

We had a locally owened dept store with extensive sporting goods esp guns, that before they lost ffl would take me back to store room or go behind counter to examine all to choose which one I wanted. I miss those days

I think you are getting upset over a minor issue. It is not like he took it to the back and told you it was "from the back". He was packing it up right in front of you. You knew what you were getting into before you forked over the money. If you don't want it, go to another store. I am with others, unless it had scratches or other issues, I wouldn't worry too much.

Agree with most of the posts here.

IF the gun had handling marks, dings, scratches, etc then you've got a right to expect some kind of mark down in price. Otherwise, no harm, no foul. I have found Academy to be a decent place to find hunting clothes and what-not, but have not found them to be particularly cheaper on firearms. And there are plenty of places to buy that I believe exhibit more firearm knowledge. Of course, this may hold more or less true depending upon the employees at each specific Academy.

The shops I deal with will let me handle the display model and are more than willing to pull every boxed one they have in the back, allowing me to inspect each to determine which I want. Many (if not most) times I end up taking the display model.

Perhaps the salesman didn't know it was the last one until after he got you started on the paperwork and he checked inventory.

Go back to the store and apologize. Tell the clerk you realized you caused a lot of problems and ask him if he would please sell you the same gun without marking the price up! For his trouble, offer to buy his dinner and pay for him a membership in the NRA!!:D

He probably didn't know it was the last one until he went to the back and realized they didn't have any more. Unless it had a lot of heavy handling marks I don't think a discount was warranted.
