Academy Sport, Thumbs UP or DOWN ???

Unless it was a used gun why would you expect just because it was in a rack to get a "discount"?
Here's why...

Because one has no way of knowing how previous customers have treated the display model when they handled it.

Rimfire - get me one from the back. I don't know how many times some rube has dry fired the thing.

Most rifles - don't care unless - see above

Most revolvers - don't care unless - see above

Semi-Auto pistol - get me one from the back - especially if it's a 1911 platform. I don't know how many times some rube has let the slide slam forward on an empty chamber (bad for 1911's not sure about other platforms).

I got a Sightron SII 4.5-14x42 illuminated reticle scope on clearance at Academy the other day for $160. I was quite happy!
The guns at Academy are kept behind the counter. They don't get handled THAT much. If you don't want a display model, well, fine. However, I think it's unfair to somehow think that Academy should discount every single gun they have out for display. It's an AR15. How much damage could possibly be done from a few people holding it for a few seconds???
How many other sporting goods stores do you know of that sell AR's?? Dick's doesn't. Sports Authority doesn't. When Wal-Mart finally lowers the boom on guns/ammo once and for all, you can go back to Academy and thank them for all the good deals they're giving us and for the fact that you don't have to drive 30 miles to the nearest gun shop just to get some ammo for your .22.
Like I said, if you don't want a display model, well fine. But don't blame the fact that you can't get exactly what you want on Academy.
Oh, and when you finally DO find an AR, maybe you'll consider going back and buying some of their $7.57 a box brass-cased .223 Serbian ammo to feed it!!! (You won't find it at Wal-Mart or your local gun shop that cheap....)

It wouldn't have bothered me one bit. As most others have said, it had not been fired. I think you got a little bent for no reason. The poor guy probably didn't realize it was the last one. He may have just came into work 5 minutes before you stopped in.

As long as there was no scratches or like I would have happily brought the rifle home with me at full price. The Academys that I've been to don't allow dry firing at all. I give them a thumbs up.

Just like a pair of shoe, you would not bring home a pair on display and call it BRAND NEW SHOE.

Sure you would, if it were the only pair in your size that you wanted. I bet you wouldn't give it a second thought. You've probably even bought NEW shoes that were WORN by other people, too, even if they were in the "back". How many others tried those shoes and walked around in them before deciding on a different size or style? I guess you wouldn't like a NEW car because it had a few miles on it from being driven on/off the ship, truck, etc because, oh my God, it's been DRIVEN before! Quit being so fussy.

The display guns have never been fired and only casually caressed by other customers.

Not true. Virtually all manufacturers test fire their guns. Not that it makes it "used", but your statement is incorrect. Ever handled a "new" Kel-Tec? Those things are filthy as KT apparently doesn't even make an attempt to clean them or even run a bore snake down the barrel.

Besides, it's no big deal. A firearm could be cleaned, even down to a detail strip, so spic and span that it would be impossible to tell it's fired. I know I could.
