I'm currently on business in Taipei for a week - anyone know of interesting shops to browse for any firearms/military related gear?

Or other TW first-timer tips, for that matter...? :) I'll have time to see a couple of sights.

Taipei's Tian Mu district used to have dedicated knife shops and accessories stores. Most of the gear is for airsoft play, but they often use real milspec gear.

It's been a while since I've been thru there though. Tian Mu is considered the foreign-expat area where lots of English teachers and students live.

While we're on this subject, my best friend is going to Viet Nam on vacation. I have no idea why other than the dollar is stronger against Vietnamese currency than it is against the Euro. He asked me if I wanted him to bring me back anything in particular. I have no idea what he can get there, Viet Nam was over and I spent my time in other jungles when I was in the army. Any suggestion for goodies he might bring or send back?

A couple more:
1. The girls you meet in the bars will be able to outdrink you; and
2. Take a drive outside of Taipei City and go look a some Betelnut Girls stands. Give the betelnut a try.

Check out the Chek Kai Shek memorial (with the changing of the guard), and the Taipei museum. I visited Tapei for a couple days when I was stationed in Okinawa.

Different govt. is charge right now, Chang Kai Shek's name has been removed from everything in Taiwan. It is now called the "Memorial Hall" and I'm not sure whether there are still guards there.

Definitely go to the National Museum. 6000 years of China's arts & treasures are stored there in a armored & bomb-proof building. More is stored there than is left on mainland China.

Thanks for the info! My thoughts exactly on the airsoft gear - they do "IPSC" on airsoft here so there's likely to be serious-ish equipment available, though I don't airsoft myself.

Will definitely check out the nat'l museum.

My dad went to Taipei on R&R during VietNam. He liked it he said. I've heard of those drinking girls before too!

What does Taiwan military use for a rifle nowadays? IIRC they were using the M14, Type 57?

Guns are banned in Taiwan, so don't expect to find any real steel. Here are some airsoft/equipment shops that may interest you:

There are also quite a few stores in the Wanhua district.

Popular tourist destinations:

1. Taipei 101 - used to be the tallest building on Earth

2. Night markets - the one at Shihlin is right next to the Metro station.

3. Maokong Gondola (Cable Car) - newest tourist attraction in Taipei. Highly recommended. Good sight-seeing along the ride, and good food and tea at the various destinations. You can get to it very easily by taking the Metro.

Heh, this is sweet. Only on a place like THR can someone ask about tips on guns/knives, etc in Taiwan, and get a bunch of experianced answers so quick. This place never ceases to amaze and impress me.

We now return to the thread already in progress....

Taiwan military is currently getting T91 rifles.

Some units may still have T65K2. Reserve units may still have T65K1 or T57/M14.

Honor Guard drill rifles are chrome-plated M1 Garands. If that gets your blood boiling, do check out one of those change of guard ceremonies at Chiang Kai Shek Memorial (aka Plaza of Democracy), Sun Yat Sen Memorial, or the Martyr's Shrine.

Had dinner with the Swedish Ambassador at the Grand Hotel in Tiepei, can highly recommend the minced squab (pigeon ).They had San Miguel beer for $.05 a glass. ( by the way this was 1961 ) things may have changed some since then.

I wish the animosity between USA and North Korea didn't exist. A lot of American tourists can go visit the Democratic People's Republic Of Korea. It is a very beautiful, mystical, and almost surreal place. Absolutely nothing like the western media portrays the country.
Get on the board the minibus and ride through Pyongyang at night. You will see the most beautiful sights you ever seen.
North Korea is a friendly nation, and it is willing to be friends with everyone if everyone is not so quick to bash it and demonize it just because it is a Communist country.

When I drove on the banks of the Yalujiang few years ago, on the border between China and DPRK, I was able to receive radio broadcasts from the other side. The beauty of the things I heard led me to go on a search for more of this kind of music. I wish I could drove on and on forever along that sacred river.

I found many on the Internet.

The above is a song from North Korea. Please listen to it carefully. I think it is the most beautiful thing I ever heard.

Please don't just think about girls, sex, beer and other things. There are many more beautiful things on the world, if only more people would open their eyes to them and let sunlight into their lives.

Also, the tallest structure in the world is the Ryugong Hotel in Pyongyang. At 105 stories, it casts a shadow over all of Taipei's tower.

Not to bash Taiwan but the island is full of moral corruption and capitalist decadence, the remainders of the Guomingdang regime from the 1940s that the People's Liberation Army was unable to eradicate.

Sir, I hope you were not serious, because such comments are probably not in line with THR. As a native of Taiwan, I have to say that I took offense at your thinly-masked political bashing.

If Wiki is to be believed, Ryugyong Hotel is only 330 m tall. Taipei 101 stands at 449.2 m ground to roof, and 509.2 m including the antenna. I don't know how the shadow can be cast unless you propose to rewrite laws of physics.

Again, heartfelt thanks for the tips for Taipei! Yes, THR won't cease to amaze.

Checked out the Shihlin markets, good fun and amazing foodstuffs. Oyster omelet, mmmm. Also a very good airsoft store there, serious holsters and other nylon. I'll be getting some of that stuff, definitely. Today after work we checked out a huge 24h book store downtown. Amazing.

I've met just the friendliest, most open and polite people here. The professional part of the trip has been excellent. Tomorrow, Taipei 101 and the national museum, and some more airsoft stores...
