OK, so I'm cruising the LGS. They've had a Weatherby Vanguard in .243 there since last fall. Has a REALLY nice scope, and was marked at $699. Marked as used but likely fired very little if ever.

Kinda high so no big deal. So, last time I'm there it's marked down to $569. Hmmm. Better.

So, I pick it up this time and take it over to one of my favorite counter guys there. Ask if he's got any more room on it. He says "we're clearing out anything with a sale tag. Make me an offer". So, I ponder about half a second and say $450. He looks at the inventory book, then says "sold".

Guess I've got a new pronghorn rifle. FWIW, if anybody is looking for a rifle, Cabelas is having a sale on these right now for $379 IIRC. Since this one has a $400 scope, I'm still OK

Timing is everything! Congrats on the new rifle.

Still don't get the accidentally part though, unless you're like me and this is what you would tell the wife when you brought it home.

You: "Honest honey I made them an offer so low I knew they would never accept it."
Her: "So what happened?"
You: "They accepted it!"

Nikon Monarch UCC 6.5-20x40 AO with target turrets. As for the accident part, yeah. I didn't think in a hundred years they'd accept $450. Didn't really mean to make an offer they'd accept. Just worked out that way.

Kinda like running into a cute girl totally by chance and asking her out. She accepts and you end up marrying her. Except the rifle never files for divorce, runs off with another guy, and takes all your money.

never takes all your money? hmm you need to shoot more. congrats sounds like a solid deal.

Congrats on a nice buy. I've had my Vanguard 243 since 1978 and it has always been an excellent and accurate shooting rifle.

My kind of accident! I have won a couple of auctions that way ... early low bid that nobody topped. And picked up a brand new Remington 541T many years ago the same way you did ... low offer in a gun store not expecting them to take it.

Yours was a good snag. Congrats!

I bought a rifle accidently this week also

At least that's what I told my sweet wife...as we discussed it and I was forgiven for my "accident", she asked "what made you just go ahead and do it?".

I smiled and said "The thought went through my head that its better to ask for forgiveness than for permission..."...LOL

Congrats on your accident :D

So, I kinda like accidentally stopped by Cabelas today. Identical rifle is $529, and an equivalent scope is well north of $400. I'm feeling better by the minute

It's just that I see a lot of posts here about getting stuff for a good price. There are deals out there. Just gotta dig for them. Most they can say it no.

When I used to ask girls out in high school (and all of my adult life) I got that all the time. Used to it now. I just expect "no". Usually HELL no! Acceptance is an unusual and satisfying response.

Hey, you have to like the rifle. A good deal on a gun you don't like is only a deal if you're buying to resell.

So stop talking about the deal and start talking about the rifle! We need pics ... and a range report!

Yeah I accidently bought a rifle, I was married at the time; that was the best excuse I could come up with too!

I accidentally buy on GB all the time. I throw a ridiculous bid, it gets close, more bids come in, and during the week since I made the silly bid I start envisioning all the stuff I can do with that shiny new toy. Next thing I know, I'm over retail for some 40 year-old whatsit. Oh well, they don't make them like that anymore.

Yeah, see that kinda one of the things I really do avoid. If it's not cheap, it's not coming home unless it's something real special. I pride myself on getting things for cheap. Actually for REAL cheap.
