I am in the process of looking for a bolt gun. I am torn between 22 magnum and 22 LR and at this point am considering both.

What kind of accuracy do you get out of your Ruger 77/22? Which is going to be more accurate, the 22 LR or 22 mag, or will there be a significant difference?

In general,

.22LR is more accurate than .22 Mag.

My 77/22 will shoot 1/2" 5 shot 50 yard groups with the right ammo (Win. Power Point).

The bedding is tricky. I found that out when I took off the stock to checker the wrist, and when I reassembled the rifle it lost its accuracy. I finally had to glass bed it (which is no big project) and it recovered nicely.

The trigger is a pain; very heavy for this type of rifle. I replaced it with a Dayton-Traister adjustable, which requires a little fitting which you can do yourself without gunsmith skills, and now it's a fine squirrel gun. Excellent value. Handsome, and it's a grown-up size rifle so it's comfortable.

Integral scope mounts are solid and reliable. Safety is excellent. Nice sling swivel attachments.

I use a 4X fixed scope. One 10 rd mag in the rifle and another in my pocket, and I never have to carry ammo. 20 shots on squirrels in an afternoon would be a truly exceptional day.

Had one of the first .22mag 77/22's in the early 90's---with no trigger work---a cheap Simmons 3x9x40---it would easily do sub 1-inch groups at 100yds with most any load I used---mostly CCI. It took 37 rabbits and one dillo--in a 2 day outing at a west TX ranch-----2 days meaning mornings and evenings---waaay too hot during the day.

The best shot that time out was a jack nailed right in heart(right where I aimed)--paced off 125yds---rested off the box of the truck.

Had to sell the rifle cause I was young and poor and needed money for other things at the time:( .

Just this week picked up a 77/17 and scope---haven't shot it yet---so no report on new production 77's----the trigger from the factory breaks cleanly at 4.5lbs---so I probably won't even mess with it.
