ACOG

Definitive comments! Guess there aren't too many TA 33 users yet to report as that one, the 3X30 compact with more eye relief, is still pretty new. I'm still looking for one mounted to see for myself and compare to the EOTech I've seen. I think the 3X TA 33 with its greater eye relief would suffice even better than the TA 11 for close-ups and still give the magnification for up to 600 m.

The only thing about the TA33 (and I haven't been able to play with one firsthand yet) that would make me doubtful is the limited field of view.

With the 5 degree field of view on the TA11, you can occasionally get a situation where the field viewable through magnification is smaller than what the body of the TA11 obscures - so you have to get used to switching back and forth mentally between the weak eye and strong eye if you are scanning for targets. I don't know if the even smaller field of view in the TA33 would make that easier or more difficult.

On paper the TA11 has more eye relief and yet the marketing for the TA33 says for law enforcement and military uses implying that the unit is good for relatively close up to farther out. This is the combination I'm looking for and yet one of the dealers and some of you suggest the TA11 might be better. Trijicon also states longer eye relief for the TA33 but it is shorter in the specs than the 11. I have a call into Trijicon but haven't heard back yet. Did speak with them last week and quite helpful.

Seems part of the problem is that there aren't that many users reporting on the TA33 yet including those who have experience with both the TA11 and 33. Presumeably there are some advantages with the 33 for Trijicon to have brought it to market. The dealer also said he was being told up to 12-16 weeks for delivery for many of the Trijicon products.

I've used the TA11 from contact to 600yds, so it will definitely fufill the multipurpose role well. As to the TA33, the only place I've seen someone who owns one comment is in the Optics forum at AR15.com.

I'm in the camp that likes the TA-11F with Chevron. I had a TA-31, sold it, and replaced it with the TA-11F. The longer eye relief works better for me. If only the TA-11F was as compact as the TA-31! :)

ACOG TA33 report

Sorry I don't remember what forum this came from but not this one. Some time ago I pasted this ACOG TA33 report to Word to keep for future reference. Hope I'm not overstepping my bounds by pasting it here w/o references that I no longer have but it may help answer a few questions raised here as to FOV, etc. Here it is:

"Alright....Jason from BigDawg Tactical hooked me up with this rig and it arrived today. I immediately took it to the range for some testin'.

First off I've owned TA31's, TA11's, Compact ACOG's, Aimpoints, EoTechs, and a few variable scopes in between. I recently decided to 'dumb down' my AR's to make them SHTF ready, rugged, and obnoxiously easy to use. Flip the safety to "fire" and go. Given the TA33R8's BDC feature, BAC feature, chevron reticule, and overall lightweight construction, THIS is the only magnified optic for me! It's like a TA31 hooked up with a TA50 one wild saucy night and conceived an illegitimate child!

Construction wise, it's built like any other ACOG is - rugged. The front portion of the ACOG is what looks to be an added component, but it dubbin' around with it - it's certainly far from fragile and looks to be fastened in a way that will allow the ACOG to uphold Trijicon's reputation for bombproof glass. The dials are easy to reach and adjust. The fiber optic tube is standard - no cracks. The Larue Mount is as you'd imagine the soulmate for ACOG's and this one's no different.

The eye relief on this scope is in my opinion the largest benefit. I shoot NTC and the smaller FOV (19.3 at 100) makes the BAC real easy to use. I also find the smaller FOV, eye relief, and overall small diameter of this ACOG to be REAL nice in keeping the sight picture concise and my surroundings unobstructed. Comparatively, the TA11 now seems WAY too heavy and the TA31 feels like my eyeball has to molest the scope from 1.5" out to maintain a sight picture. The small overall size and extra 0.4" of eye relief makes all the difference in the world. I'm now spoiled.

At first I was hesitant about the smaller FOV but now that I've tried it out - I completely get it. This scope is SO much easier and I can see myself being 'faster' with this ACOG than I could be with any other. Beyond that, I'm sure the BDC feature will prove itself useful and entertaining when time permits.

At 3X30, the magnification is supreme for Minute of Man shooting and my eyes adjust quickly using the BAC. The glass is perfect as you'd expect from Trijicon. For testing I used a different lower than pictured...one with a Geissele trigger so right off my 3 shot groups were 1.5MOA using 62gr SS109. This gun shoots 1/2 MOA easy so I just need to spend more than 1 box of ammo and practice some.

Other than that - I'm very thankful Trijicon made this scope. It's a perfect blend of precision and speed. It's eye relief, size, and FOV make for a fast & compact general purpose optic. For 10-300 yard shooting, this is in my opinion, the perfect ACOG. For shooting under 10 yards, it seems like it'd serve me well - I may toss some Bulter Creek Flip Caps on this one for an occluded option since the construction will allow for it! Plus, the caps will make the ACOG Scope Coat a thing of the past.

Something always kept me from hanging onto an ACOG. I feel the TA33R8 was made just for me!

If you're looking for an ACOG - don't overlook this guy. It is in my opinion the ultimate 10-300 yard SHTF ACOG for a 14.5"- 16" AR15. It's truly an amazing piece of glass."

Acog 33

Thanks Dutchman! That's the one. Maybe we could get Hokie to do a follow-up if he's around?. My ACOG still has not arrived but neither has the rifle. Can't wait to put it all together. Still determining what light I want. Was talking to Calvin at Brightflashlights but he's gone silent so will start looking elsewhere. Hope everything is ok there.

On the Chevron recticle... I notice that the first BDC mark is at 400 yards. Are there parts of the chevron itself that line up with 200 and 300?

ACOG chevron

According to info. sent to me by ACOG (operator instructions for TA-33-8) the top of the chevron should be point of aim at 100m, the underside of the chevron (highest point) is 200 m, the point of the vertical post is 300 and then on down to the marked 400 m, etc. Each width of the horizontal bars is equivalent to a 19 inch wide target. Also, each click of adjustment is 1/3 inch at 100 m and 3 clicks = 1 inch at 100 m. This is slightly different than some scopes. Hope that helps.

I was looking for minimum bulk and weight, maximum eye relief, good field of view, and simplicity for an M4gery. Have been running a TA45-2 1.5X24 for about six months now and love it. I don't think it gives much if anything up to the 1X Eotech type sights close in, and will let me call my shots on a silhouette target out to the 250 yard battle zero.

Considering that fragmentation from the M193 type round in a 16" barrel is only good out to about 140 yards or so, I wouldn't change a thing. Worth every penny.
