Advice on Building My Own AR:

pretty much all currently made ar's are flat top, forward assist you pretty much have to go looking for one without those features

the del-ton and psa kits where all you add is a stripped lower are a great option, but they are not in stock lately.

get yourself either a complete lower (gunbroker is a good source, but figure in shipping and ffl fees before purchasing).. or a stripped lower (i just picked up a PSA for 80 shipped and then found out my local dealer had the same lower for 100 out the door, so I got the one from gunbroker and picked up another from my dealer when i came in to do the paperwork on the other.

personally, last couple builds I did were in 6.8 and went with 18" mid weight barrels with mid length gas systems.

my next couple of builds will be a generic mid length gas system with dpms free float tube and yhm flip up sight gas block on an 18" mid weight barrel. one I will keep in 5.56 and the other is going to be my new experiment in 300 AAC (i don't like that they only make 9" and 16" barrels in this chambering, so got my barrel maker making one right now).

get a good upper and lower vise block set (there are some aluminum ones on ebay for like $30) . on the clam shell type of upper block sets be warned that some upper receivers are not in spec all the way and you could run into problems with this style of vise block.

set of punches from lowes for $9, an armorers wrench for $35 ish and a torque wrench from sears (the cheap dial kind is only mid $20) and you are good to go. a no go gauge is usefull as well and you can pick them up off or midway or brownells cheaply or from gunbroker or ebay .

once you build 1 AR you will want to build another or "tweak" yours.

UniversalFrost I heard that the 6.8 uppers and lowers from different manufacturers don't fit together like the old 5.56. Did you find that the case?

to Southernsorrow: There are some lo pro upper receivers out there that do not have a FA or deflector. DPMS has one. S&W has one, but i am not sure if they sell the receiver alone. JP has one, but it is very expensive. There are others, just can't name them right now.

go over to the 6.8 forums for all the 6.8 info you never knew you needed...lol

make sure the upper and barrel extension are both m4 cut. m4 cut is very important for 6.8 feeding.

last few i have built were aero precision uppers (surplus ammo and arms) with black hole weaponry barrels (look through my old posts for some of the builds I have done and posted here). great uppers and great barrels.

another good builder is AR performance and he is also a 6.8 fanatic.

for the uppers from dpms and the like, with no forward assist and no shell deflector they are almost always a bit wider than a mil spec receiver, so the clam clamp block won't work and you will need a set of vise blocks.

The 6.8 uses the same stripped lower and upper receivers. That is not to say there may not be a difference in fit between or within manufacturers, but it shouldn't be any different than for the 5.56.

The only difference is the barrel, bolt, and magazine. You can buy uppers and lower receivers with 6.8 printed or etched onto them, but they are the same dimensions as for the 5.56/.223.
