Can anybody tell me what the present situation is with transporting ammo. I am aware of transporting the guns, but can you put ammo with it? Or do you transport seperate? What's the scoop?......Thanks in advance

Usually up to 11 pounds, in checked luggage, not with the firearm case.

It depends

It depends on the airline. You have to check their web sites.
I suggest taking a second box to lock the ammo in.
There are also volume restrictions depending on the airline or the current person's knowledge / interpretation at the counter. Make sure you take print outs from their web site, and TSA's and highlight it.
Be polite and check in early.

One more item. i suggest storing your gun case in a not so obvious larger piece of luggage.

My trip to Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana from Utah went smooth. I little comedy at SLC airport, but more on that later.

Still a little confused. I read what I could per AA airlines. It doesnt say ammo must be carried seperate. It also says multiple cases can be checked.
I'd like to put all the suff in one box if possible looking at having to switch planes and the possibility of lost stuff.

Let me ask a real stupid question here...... what would happen if I packed in the ammo with my clothes and just declared the unloaded gun box in at baggage?

The ammo can be in the hard case with the rifle, but must be in factory boxes. You can carry a fair bit of ammo, not just 20 rounds or something like that. The rifle must be unloaded, obviously, and I usually make sure the magazine or bolt is removed.

The TSA workers like to be able to SEE that everything is jake, so make things visible. They are always confused about who (if anybody) can touch the guns/magazine/ammo, so make is apparent that things are as they should be - guns and magazines empty, and ammo in factory boxes.

I used to fly 2x weekly for work. Read the official links provided by other posters. Follow the rules TO THE LETTER.

My #1 advice is to give yourself LOTS of extra time to check in before your filght. I have been paged out of the secure area back to the baggage office to provide a key turn for baggage inspection a few times; it took an extra 45 minutes. I was told that if I didn't show up, since the TSA is forbidden by law to bust the lock on a firearm case, the bag would have not been put on the plane and I would have to return at my own expense to unlock the case for inspection before the bag would be transported.

Keep that in mind. The airline/TSA policies are straightforward, but be prepared for anything.
