1. Does anyone know the barrel twist rates for the AK-47s or AKMs?

I was thinking it was 1:9.4"...but wanted to double check.

2. How much AK barrel would be required to stabilize a heavy 200 to 220 gr bullet?

Thanks,
Keith

I believe you are correct on the twist rate. How much barrel would be required, I wouldn't have a clue. Normally, I would say the twist rate is plenty fast to stabilize most bullets of that weight in that caliber. However, I don't know how fast the x39 could get those going, and linear velocity, which is important to understanding bullet stabilization, so I guess your only choice would be to work up a load and try it. It will quickly become obvious if you're keyholing.

Back when I had an old Polytrech Legend( machined receiver-dam I miss it) ,they were made in 1-10 for the 7.62X39....things may have changed...I know the Arsenal 5.56's are optimal with the 62grain and heavier loadings;so I am assuming they are 1-7 or 1`-9...the 5.45's???seeing as the 7N6 started out as a 53 grain load(that FMJ with the airspace inside the tip),it may be the same ;or a bit slower....I know that loading had the lead core ahead of the steel insert as opposed to the M855 loading(lead behind the insert);so stabilization my be different.Thats a good question;you got me thinking:)

You can always measure the twist rate with a cleaning rod.

Whether or not it will stabilize a 200+ gr bullet at x39 velocities is probably something you will have to actually attempt to know for sure.
