I'm cleaning an AKM after around 2k rounds. I've found that bore tech eliminator works quite well in barrels. However, I'm out of clp and would like to know if this solvent can remove fouling from the bolt carrier, gas tube, bolt, etc.

I have kroil too so if bore tech isn't any good, will kroil be a good option for cleaning my bolt, bolt carrier, and what not?

Kroil is a penetrating oil, not a cleaner. It will help unstick some stuff, lift stuff that might come off with some scrubbing anyway, and free up stuff that needs to get something between it and metal, but it won't dissolve nearly as much as an actual cleaner.
The Boretech I'm not sure on.
But neither of them will hurt an AK. Give them a shot.

Boretech will remove carbon and copper deposits, so yes, use it to clean all of those pieces.

It's an AK. Does it really need cleaning? ;)

I say that only partially in jest. I can't remember the last time I cleaned my AK or SKS, and both rifles just keep on ticking through hundreds of rounds. If I didn't have the correct cleaner on hand right this minute, I wouldn't be too worried about it.

WD-40 actually makes a good cleaner in a pinch too. Just wipe it off and re-oil when when you're done cleaning with it; don't use it for lubrication. But it is a good solvent.

I just run a brush a couple of times through the bore, and oil well. Still working!

Clean the bore normally. Wipe down the bolt, gas piston, and the receiver with detergent or synthetic motor oil, let it soak in a little. Then wipe it all clean. Repeat, if it's really sooty. Wipe it all clean again, let it sit and drain, so it's not drippy.
Put it all back together, and good to go.
IME, less seems to be better, with AKs.

To quickly get into corners, gaps and other tight places, have you tried using both a toothbrush and patches?

The AKMs' rails and the bolt carrier's thin rear slots, even locking lug recesses etc are so much easier to clean with a toothbrush, though I only use the softer bristles (my guns are never encrusted).
Group consists of the Maadi (A.R.M.), MAK 90 and AMD-65 (TGI). Recently added another 7.62x39: the Czechpoint VZ-58, quite different animal.

I just use some remoil on mine, or hoppes if any. Use what you got. Just don't oil the gas tube.

On AK's and the like, I use carb cleaner as a solvent. Make sure to clean the chamber and bore out. For a lube, whatever cheap generic motor oil from auto zone is fine. Many AK's we "obtained" from the enemy in afg. were lubed but smelled really bad. Found out they were using used cooking oil for weapons lube.

Ahh, is good rifle, Comerade!

Find mostly empty wodka bottle...if is not mostly empty, then MAKE mostly empty, ok? Da- then poor wodka down bore. This is the end bullet comes out of, yes? Ok, now jam stick in chamber to hold open bolt- is thing you pull here. Ok, wipe out dirt with rag, see? Yes, good? Ok, now open hatch on T-55 engine, where we keep food and contraband. Find engine oil dipstick, yes? Ok, use dipstick and drip a few drops of oil into gun.

See, Tovarisch, is eeezy-peezy, as you say. Haha, pass me wodka bottle- I see some is left in bottom.........

Lol, that was great! I was gonna say tie it to the back of your jeep or truck and drag down a creek. Pour some used motor oil all over it and wipe down. Good to go.

But NightLords cleaning method sounds better. Especially the vodka part! ;)

“AKOU”, “Rob Ski” (American-former Polish soldier) on YouTube. These are created partly as entertainment, but also to evaluate reliability and durability.

His 7.62x39 guns which use 2,500-5,000 rounds Briefly suffer a little (externally) before he begins extensive shooting tests for :
A) determining whether the steel is possibly low or higher quality.
B) assembly quality control.

As nearly every —imported 7.62x39 rifle (includes the unique VZ-58)— tested by him indicates both high-grade steel and construction, ....his cleaning methods seem to contribute,
along with monitoring barrel temperatures.

The best cleaning In The World won’t —improve—low quality guns.

Watch the Ammunition! I bought a Chinese AKS and a MAK 90 back in the day, also three thousand rounds of tinned 7.62X39 that was corrosive. It's still around. I use old GI bore cleaner on the bore, bolt, and piston for that. Most of that is shot up, but I have a can held in reserve. B Revolvers 001.jpg

It doesn't really matter.
As long as you clean the bore (for corrosive ammunition), wipe the interior and oil it. You should be fine. The occasional copper removal is helpful as well when accuracy degrades significantly.

On the upside, alot of that '80s. Norinco stuff was steel-cored too. And whilst I hesitate to call any bullet cruising along at a liesurely 2300fps "armor-peircing," it certainly could be called "barrier-defeating."

I dont have Chicom AK ammo left anymore, but I do have a few boxes of early-'90s .223 stashed away and it always puts on a good show when it strikes the plates at the indoor range.

If I where to clean mine. i think it would run better if I cleaned it with ever clear. I mean its vodka. Just very potent vodka. Havnt cleaned mine yet. 500-800 rounds. Just keeps running. Want clean until it stops or breaks. Its a century arms special. Guess I got a good one.

Cleaner????? What you mean cleaner for AK???????

Field strip it, remove wood stock and hand guards and run that puppy through a cycle in the dishwasher. Just make sure you oil it up good once done. And don't and I do mean don't forget to clean out the dishwasher before the wife finds out!

On a serious note, If you use corrosive ammo, it won't hurt to run a cleaning patch or three soaked in windex or even plain vinegar through the barrel and gas tube to neutralize the corrosive agents. Then oil/lube everything up good. Any good solvent will work to clean an AK (and SKS). Just make sure to lube the gun well afterwards.

"I'm cleaning an AKM after around 2k rounds"

You need to clean AK's? I thought they were dependable!

Next think ya know, they will be telling us ya shouldn't be shooting 5.56 NATO through 7.62 ComBloc guns!!!
