Lately I've been researching a scope mount for my MAK-90. Since it doesn't have a side mount rail I've been leaning toward a Beryl-style mount. I know there are plenty of companies that make decent mounts that replace the receiver cover, but in order to mount securely they all require the removal of the rear sight.

Is there any company that makes a receiver mount that has an integral AK-style rear sight? Is there some issue with this kind of setup that I'm not seeing?

Are you wanting a scope on the rifle, or a red dot?

If you're considering a red dot for the rifle, look into the Ultimak rail, and a micro red dot like the Aimpoint R-1. If that is outside of your budget, look at the micro red dot sight from Primary Arms; you can get a few dollars off by buying the rail and the sight at the same time from him.

As far as a dust cover mount; every time you break it down to clean, you'll have to re-zero the rifle.

Only if you're running glass optics (or similar heavy items).

If dust cover mounted irons sucked so badly, and needed a re-zero every time the weapon was broken down for cleaning, why do Tromix, Red Jacket, Krebs and others install them on their guns?

It's all about physics and geometry.

Are you wanting to mount a scope or are you wanting to mount iron sights on the cover? You linked a rail mount which makes me assume you are wanting a scope but the wording of your first entry makes it sound like more of an iron sight question.

If you are wanting to move the iron sights back you could add a set of techsights www.techsights.com. If you want to use an actual scope then I think you'd be better off using the scope rail you listed. I'm no AK expert but I'm pretty sure that rail will fit most all AKs. Since it is riveted you'll probably want a gunsmith to mount it.

Sorry for the confusion... what I meant was I wanted a way to mount a red dot over the receiver while still keeping the iron sights the way they are. If that rail will work, I can just use any mount that will fit a standard AK rail, so it simplifies things by not involving the iron sights.

Ahhh. If you are just looking to mount a scope then I think getting a rail installed is really going to be your best bet. Then you can mount any kind of scope you want. They also make offset scope mounts that attach to those rails that put the scope to the left of the usual sight line. Some people like them, some don't.

But by all means take a look at http://www.tech-sights.com/ anyway. Then you'll get the best of both worlds.

I'll look into getting that side rail installed. The tech sights look good, but I think the factory irons will suit my needs just fine, so if it ain't broke I won't fix it. Thanks for the help, everyone!
