A shift mate of mine has in his mind that he wants an AK. I never having owned or shot one, think that having a shooting buddy getting one sounds like a genius plan :) I know quiet a bit about the weapon and it's history, but squat about it as a commerically produced firearm.

He's looking to spend around $300, and no more then $400. He basically wants the sucker to go bang when the trigger is pulled, shoot 7.62x39, shoot minute of badguy at 100yds, and be stupidly reliable. No plans to scope it or do anything like that, folding or fixed stock doesn't matter. Recomendations folks? I know that Yugo imports have gotten a pretty good following for being cheap and reliable, would that be the way to go? Any companies/models to avoid?

Thanks for the info,

Tell your friend to up his budget to $400. This puts a WASR-10 in his price range, and I highly recommend one. There are just a couple of things to look out for, but they are a very good value for the money. And tons of fun.

Mine is a full stock, with wooden furniture (for the classic Kalashnikov look). Goes boom every time!

I got an stg-2000 for $380, but I don't really like it too much because of the ****ty romy receiver and poor finish. The bolt body is scored with tooling marks or something... I've come to the conclusion that it's one of those little russian features to give it looser tolerances. I heard somewhere the scores are to give dirt a place to go. Whatever it is, it feels like a poorly made gun overall. The loose handguards don't help. I would suggest a Yugo, one with the nice 'polished' bolt. Personally I'd get the underfolder, but that's because I love compact guns.
