Alternative to Bush?

Wanna be silly?

As long as we're talking about giving people strokes, vote for Hillary Clinton and watch the Republicans drop like flies . . . .

Not for realistic comment.

I used to agree, until he came down on the side of soldiers obeying ALL orders, lawful or not. (The Michael New case.) I believe what he said was, "We can't have ordinary soldiers deciding for themselves which orders are lawful and which are not!"

I was extremely dismayed when I heard him say that, as well. If I was a soldier, you can better damned well bet I'm going to be making my own decisions about the legality of orders.

No, I don't want to be silly.

It's a very serious question looking for serious answers. When I have enough serious input, I'll make a very serious suggestion.

I'd vote for Rice simply because it would give the Democratic Party a stroke.

Yep, I can dream of a Rice/Powell ticket. Powell would make a good veep, he's way to measured to be stuck out front. Not a perfect ticket, but I'd sit down and relax everyday at the TV, waiting to see how the next demo-babbler delicately tried to say "they're not black enough". :D Might be useful in ridding ourselves of skin based grading and privelege.

Even better, Rice/Paul.

Ron Paul a basically a RINO.

I'm not familiar with him, but a lot of people seem to like him. Please elaborate on your opinion. Thank you.

Oh, I completely support him and I think he's basically the best man in the House of Representatives... but he's a Libertarian. Even ran under our ticket for President in '88. He only ran as a Republican because it was a pragmatic gimmick to get himself elected into office, due to the bias against third-party candidates.

So, basically, he's a good RINO. ;-)

If Condelezza Rice won the Presidency on the Republican ticket the media wouldn't have to label her because the NAACP would already be busy verbally ripping her to shreds. She has no victim complex and worse still is a self-made woman - something they cannot and will not tolerate because their entire power base is built upon maintaining the image of blacks as helpless victims of oppression who cannot succeed on their own.

I really have to say my new favorite politician is Robert Ehrlich, the governor of Maryland. Even in such an anti-gun state he had the guts to make sure the assault weapons ban that was being pushed died in committee where it belonged. He also is not afraid to speak his mind, not sure how many of you saw his statements about people who are working in customer service jobs and can't speak english, but I felt like giving a standing ovation. Seems to be someone who sticks up for what is right, which is hard to find these days.

I'd like to see Rice run in 2008. Rice/Powell ticket?

You want popular? Arnold Schwartzenegger... He has the Democratic-controlled legislature pretty much wound around his little finger. If he can keep up his momentum for the next 4 years, I wouldn't be surprised.

GOA Congressional ratings:

A+ includes the following, looking only to Congress. I see no rating for Governors:

House

Musgrave and Hefley - Colorado
Hostetler - Indiana
Bartlett - Maryland
Paul - Texas

Senate

Chambliss - Georgia
Inhofe - Oklahoma
Enzi - Wyoming

I noted that Oklahoma is generally the strongest and a group with no real detractors by way of rating, in either the House or Senate.

I don't see real star power here and would wonder if a Governor would be a better choice. Anyone know of ratings on Governors?

Why do some o fyou folks support Colin Powell? Just because he wore a uniform and (wrongly) got credit for Gulf I?

That man is PURE POISON! He's a Democrat in disguise!

I agree that Maryland Gov. Ehrlich is probably a pretty good choice. I think he needs get tougher with the Democratic majority House of Delegates and Senate. He has the tools. The Governor of Maryland is one of the most powerful Governorships in the US compared to other State Governor ships.

Another good choice is Republican Majority Whip US Congressman Tom "the Hammer" Delay. Strong on 2A issues.

agree that Maryland Gov. Ehrlich is probably a pretty good choice. - moa

If he's that good, I would like him to stay where he is for term limit, so he can do some good for Maryland. They could use it, considering they don't have RKBA and it is the one State I cannot drive though while packing in my annual tours of the East coast. I need for him to work on some reciprocity. First they would have to be less hostile to their own residents who want to carry.

Realgun

Should I take it that Gov. Ehrlich is also your choice? Keep in mind, this is not an attempt to get anyone elected to anything; merely get some people to sit up and take notice. My proposition will not result in changing who gets into office anywhere?

Are they more courageous than Republicans who state that we must vote for Bush, even if he isn't a good steward of our civil rights, because the alternative, Kerry, would be so much worse. Something to think about as we approach November.

Those Dems and independents that abandoned Gore over his support for radical (licensing, registration) gun control knew 1) that then candidate Bush had already stated his position on the Clinton Gun Ban and 2) that candidate Bush opposed licensing, registraition and that he signed a concealed weapons law as Governor of Texas.

We know that the only alternative to President Bush with a realistic chance to sit in the White House is John Kerry. We also know that Kerry has 1) a 100% rating of support for the Brady Campaign (formerly known as Handgun Control Inc) 2) he has 100% ratings of support from several radical anti-hunting groups (for those gun owners who also hunt this is important) and 3) the only vote he has cast this year in the Senate was for renewal of the Clinton Gun Ban and to end private sale of firearms at gun shows - going so far as leaving the campaign trail to cast the votes.

There is 1) no comparing the Bush choice over Gore to the Kerry choice over Bush when it comes to the gun issue; and 2) there is not viable alternative for gun owners other than choosing between Kerry and Bush as any attempt to "send a message" ends up screwing gun owners by electing Kerry.

I have found the opinions expressed on this board always to be sensible compared to those of say the "comment" section of the news links on the Keepandbeararms.com web site because my sense is the people who discuss topics on this web site are more interested in protecting our freedom than on sending some "no compromise" message to elected officials.

He's a naturalized citizen. Can't be President
They've been talking about amending that requirement (ie US citizen for 30 years is acceptable) since before he was elected. That's why I wouldn't be surprised.

...who would be your first choice?

I don't have enough information about Governors but I would look there first. Jeb Bush of Florida and Huckabee of Arkansas, based upon cursory research, look like possibilities. I would rely on input from gun forums like this one to get Governor recommendations.

Even if not a darling of the gun groups, it's possible that support as a reward for recently endorsed and signed important pro-gun bills would send a powerful message.

To me, a President is a lot more than a gun ownership supporter. I look to Governors for significant leadership experience.

I believe Governor Taft of Ohio has accomplished a lot and is in a second term. He is criticized by Ohio gun advocates, but he did sign CCW licensing into law. I wouldn't write him off and would be interested in more information.

p.s.

Note that George Bush of Texas would have been seriously considered if this question had been asked in 2000.

condi - from alabama and california. hell get the south, the midwest, and california, and the whole thing's won. don't even worry bout the east or north.

she's about the one person who, if she ever decided to run for the big one, i would quit wahtever i was doing and go work for her campaign.

the odds of that happening, ever, are about 5% imo.
