Aside from the cheapest target/plinking ammo you can find, do you have a preferred ammo maker?

As for me, I prefer (think my guns do too, haha) Winchester, Cor-Bon and CCI/Speer. This includes premium and budget lines. I absolutely do not use Wolf or any other of the "el cheapo" brands. The carbon build up from cheap ammo makes me insane because it cuts my shooting time/round count down and it's such PITA to clean. That, and I suspect steel cases and/or copper washed steel jacketed bullets wear out chambers, feed ramps and rifiling faster than brass and copper.

thanks for your time

Re:Cheap Ammo

I hate cheap ammo. I'm trying to remember the brand of cheap ammo that I made the mistake of using for a requalification test. Boy, that stuff was lousy.

My personal preference is Federal, then Winchester.

No 'el cheapo ammo' in my firearms except for known good surplus.
I've never owned or fired any Wolf.

for my centerfire pistols, i use remington umc for plinking/practice, and golden sabre for defense. sometimes wwb for practice if i can find it cheap.

for my .223's i use umc because i don't hunt.

for my shotguns, it either winchester, federal, remington buckshot.

for my rimfires it's cci stinger, velocitors for22 lr, and cci maximag for .22 magnum.

for my wasr's and saiga, it's whatever's cheapest. they work with anything.:D

For carry ammo it's Corbon and Winchester Rangers. Anything goes for practice ammo except the dirty dirty Wolf. Sellier & Belliot works great.

Depends on the caliber. I buy cheap stuff to plink with. I prefer PMC brand handgun ammo when I can find it. It works well, and is reliable. Looking forward to the time when the factory cranks up again.

22's: I prefer Federal for everyday shooting. Brand loyality? Maybe, but I keep a wide selection (at least 10, probably more, different brands or loadings) available for shooting when I feel like shooting or comparing different brands. For plinking, as long as it works, I'm happy.

I have no choice for plinking ammo. I just use the cheapest I can find. Mostly it is rem UMC.

I normally buy CCI, Speer, Winchester, Remington & Federal. All of my Hand Gun HD & SD rounds are Federal Hydra Shock.

I use CCI, Remington, and Federal for the most part.

I have been recently trying Fiocchi, and have ordered some Magtech.

For carry I use either Federal or Winchester JHP. For hunting varmints usually a Winchester HP. For practice I'll shoot whatever is cheapest, at this point that means a lot of Wolf in several calibers.

My defensive ammo is Federal & my range ammo for the last few years has been the WWB value pack from Wally World - if another manufacturer entered the market & was less expensive than Winchester, I'd probably buy those ---
I WOULD NOT BUY WOLF!

lol what ever is cheapest! i had an old marlin bolt action .22 that HATED Wolf .22 Steel Case ammo, it used the case would expand and i would always have extraction problems... normally took a flat head screw driver to get them out lol

In the .22 anything but Remington's famous golden bullet - too many misfires and bullets poorly crimped. For my money Federal bulk pack. For .38 I prefer Winchester or Remington. For .30-30 it's the Winchester 150 jhp, hands down. For .22 mag. - anything. It's all good. For the .243 I've had great success with Winchester ballistic silvertip. For the .351 winchester - 18.5grs. 2400 or 4227 with 180gr. corelock. For the .32acp, Fiocchi fmj, Winchester fmj, FN fmj, S & B fmj - The European ammo tends to be a litter hotter than US loadings. Corbon .32 - had 2 boxes of ammo that the rim was too large in diameter and not beveled and would not feed from the mag. Called Corbon and they had no clue. .303 British - anything except milsurplus. .223 - anything but Wolf. .222 rem. any good handloads. 9mm - golden sabre or gold dot. .45acp - whatever is handy. .308 - whatever shoots the best groups. Whenever I find a paticular lot of ammo, especially in .22lr, that really shoots well, I'll go back to where I purchased it and get as much as I can. 17hmr - can't tell the difference - they're all good (should be for the $).

I put wolf through my AR and my AK. I just clean my guns when I am done shooting. ..... doesn't everyone ? I am sort of stockpiling Lake City , and plinking with Wolf.

Actually I barely clean my AK , just the barrel now & then. My other firearms are kept pretty spotless , but the AK ... whatever.

S&B and CCI Blazer (both Aluminum and Brass) are definitely my first choices for Centerfire handgun practice ammo. I've always had really good luck with quality and they both shoot very well in my guns. Winchester and Remington have let me down too many times.

For SD handgun ammo, I've been carrying Remington Golden Sabers. However, Speer Gold Dots continue to impress me and I'm finding myself slowly transitioning over to them in all calibers.

For rifle ammo, I tend to practice with surplus almost exclusively (except for Barnual in the SKS and AK). Hornady TAP mainly gets the job of home defense.

12ga, I use Federal almost exclusively for everything. I have a ton of cheap Federal birdshot for range ammo and the shotgun's loaded with Federal LE buckshot right now.

For Rimfire, I prefer Federal with Winchester as a second choice only if Federal is unavailable.

Preferred? Well I guess I go with the cheapest stuff by the best maker, ME. I reload most of the centerfire shooting I do and my reliability is at least as good as the components I buy. No sense in buying factory stuff that won't shoot as straight and cost so much.

Used to be loyal to Federal but they were bought out. Now I make my own.

I think my .22WMR likes Remington or CCI hollowpoints. The Benelli likes Remington nitros. Havent had alot of different ammo to try with the 870.

Havent shot the mosin yet.

uhh, i tend to listen to the guns on this issue.

22 long rifle = PMC Zapper's, accurate, clean, reliable.

40 S&W, XD and Mil-Pro = Fiocchi 170 grain FMJ, hot, accurate, clean, same price as American stuff, although superior in my opinion. I now reload all of my target ammo, so I don't use it anymore. I will say the brass is awesome though. For personal defense I use the 155 grain Winchester Ranger's. $15/50 and its a good round.

SKS = Wolf 122 grain HP's, accurate and reliable, affordable

Marlin 22 magnum = Armscor 40 grain JHP, just bought a case of 1000

357 magnum = for target practice, I like the S&B 158 grain FMJ. For home defense, I'll take the 125 grain Remington Golden Sabre

Mossberg 500 12 gauge = Federal 00 buck

Use Winchester Ranger for carry in handguns, Federal Gold Medal for "carry" in rifles, and Winchester Ranger Low Recoil 00 Buck for "carry" in shotguns.

For practice, anything that will fit in the chamber, factory and handloads, cheap stuff and not so cheap stuff.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

wwb, like 10-ring said. i use it because of the similar ammo in that price range, brass cased and fmj, it is consistant, i have never had a bad rd in any caliber that i shoot, they are always clean and no dents or any of that sort they shoot good and they work everytime in everything i have ever shot them through.

umc i like and use quite often especially the 250rd value packs at wal-mart when i can use my mom's discount card. but in the past i have opened some boxes of umc and the powder from one of the rds was in the box and not in the case. that happened twice on some older .223 yello box. and i had one .40 rd that the bullet was set back in the case, but other than that i have had good feeding and reliable firing from umc. in 9, .40 and .223

i also love ultramax lead rds from dicks they work great and they are pretty accurate for lead lloads that are pretty good priced in my opinion, i shoot them in the xd's and i will soon buy some for my new .45
