Ammo Cabinet Questions

Hey Guys-

In looking for ways to store some of the ammo I'm building up I got to thinking.......

Why not buy one of the cheapy metal gun cabinets at Dicks or Walmart and install a golden rod in it, put a seal on the door and install shelves to store ammo on?

What do you think? I think it would be fairly thick gauge metal, decent lock, and should keep ammo consitant temps and dry....everything an ammo can does but more organized than a bunch of cans under the bench.

Just gathering ideas and opinions.

I can't see why not. I'm fine with the .50BMG cans though.

I bought a wooden cabinet kit from a local lumber yard and added a padlocking attachment to the doors.

Ammo is inside, most in ammo cans.

When I first put in the ammo, one of the shelves buckled at one end. I had to add cleats to hold up the shelves.

If you planning on just stacking the ammo cans inside, I'd forget the goldenrod. I would not worry about trying to seal the door either. You can't effectively do so, and the ammo cans are well sealed. If you worry about such things, toss a desiccant pack in each ammo can before closing it.

For part of my ammo stash, I got a 25 cu.ft. Knaack gangbox and will eventually get around to lining the interior with drywall (as a fire retardant), sealing holes and making some sort of silicone caulk gasket to fit with the lid. It was a little on the pricey side - I paid about $500 for mine - but if you watch the local paper and maybe check local ads on ebay and craigslist you might find a used one a lot cheaper. It locks up tight and is far heavier and has thicker steel than in most of the cheapy metal gun cabinets. Remember, unlike those cheapy gun cabinets, these things were made to withstand the daily abuse of a construction site - very heavy duty.

One thing about a cabinet is that its not as easily transported as a ammo can
when i go to shoot, i just grab the cans with the correct cartridges and go to the range
just something to think about

One option is the metal cabinet that is sold by places like Office Depot. I believe the shelves are rated for something like 100 lbs each. Cabinet locks and looks good.
