Ammo: What year ?

I was looking for a tie, I have a matter that requires I wear one. I see this old Swisher Sweets Cigar box with cotton twine...an old memory...nah that's ages ago --can't be. Forget the tie. I sit in the floor and untie the string.

Red and green box, "new Remington Hi Speed" 50 rim fire cartridges, long rifle, Kleanbore priming,Bridgeport, Conn...Ilion, Ny. No. 1522..."U" on case with a goldish color bullet. Just how old are these?

Sounds stupid, but I'm shaking, I'd like to know the approx age.

This is a long ago memory. I also found my yellow handled Case Trappper ( I thought I'd lost and Uncle had given me) Torn box top From Peters shotshells and '06 cartridges, and a yellow faded crumbling ad about Marble sights and a brass compass...other stuff in a time gone by.

I'll have to show mom... I recall her words..." That boy, I swear..."

I can't believe this, but I'd sure appreciate an approx time line.

Remington hasn't used the red & green box since sometime in the 1960s, I believe.

Other than that, I'm afraid I can't help you.

The dating of ammo from the boxes is almost as much magic as it is science.

If you can find the "lot number" usually printed on or inside one of the end flaps, Remmy might be able to give you an approximate date.

That sounds exactly like the ammo that I used when I screwed up my hearing with an Alphabet Ruger Bearcat in the late 50's.

Do you have top from the '06 BOX, of just some loose cartridges. If the former, please describe it.

As to the red-n-green Rem .22 box - - - I recall using their ammo on high school varsity rifle team in late 1950s, and the boxes were green with black and white lettering. No red.

Isn't it great to find stuff that evokes such intense memories?

No lot number on Hi Speed 22 rimfires...tobacco stains though.

The Peters '06 box is just part of a top, yellow with blue. The shotshell I'm sure is Peter's...part of the top of box, faded appears to have been folded and ...I know now for sure what this memory is.

Thin and lanky kid, spending time with an uncle, High Standard Sentinel 9 shot revolver, model 52 rimfire rifle, model 70 in '06 and model 12., in 12 and 12 bore. Circumstances for being there still pain me, the memories the analgesic.

Yeah, when I get past some current 'life experience' stuff , I'll do a stroll down memory lane, a kid, guns, breathing room and sorting it all out with an uncle whom chewed cigars, drove and old pickup and a dog that tagged along..."it aint fair, it ain't right, but we get past it and survive" -uncle

I've recently inherited a couple of guns from my Dad. With the 341-P he was given on his 16th birthday in 1939 were two boxes of .22's just like sm is describing, red with a green band box, Remington Hi-Speed Kleanbore 22 Long (not Long Rifle), with the number 1322 on the face of the box and a lot number of L15A123. I'm guessing the ammo is probably from the 1960's but I'd be curious to have a better idea. I also found a knife that looks like the famous Marine K-Bar but is marked Schrade-Walden. In the sheath my Dad had written a note saying the knife had been issued to him as part of his "728" gear when he shipped out for the South Pacific early in 1944 (he flew Marine SBD's in the Pacific). A great father who had a classic American life.
