so what are yalls opinions on ankle holsters i carry my 380 in one when im riding my scooter mainly because its so hard to carry any onther style and keep it concealed with wind blowing and every thing. just wondering if i did get in a scrape and needed it would i even be able to get to it.

btw i use one of these
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gun-Ankle-H...174?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c1f8f8ad6

its cheap but i like it because it holds the gun tight to me and doesnt flop around like the one i paid nearly 40 bucks for did

I had the same holster for my G26. It moved all over and was not comfortable. I now have a Galco ankle glove. Works great. I don't have the calf strap but it isn't a problem because it just rests on the top of my boot. If I wear low top shoes it will ride down due to the weight.

I have been practicing my draw from the ankle. I have found that pulling the pant leg is where I run into the most issues. Pulling the pants up from the front doesn't work very good. Grab the pants just above the grip of the gun on the backside of the leg with the weak hand. This will clear the gun and grip and draw the pants up. If you pull from the front it will tighten the pants against the gun and grip. When you grab in near the back it will slide up the front of your shin bone easily.

Spend some time practicing and get a good holster.

I IWB when I can because it is easier to get at quickly.

^^ The same thing can be said for a handgun. A shotgun is much better!

Carry what you can, how you can. Everything less than a M1 tank is a compromise!

For a very small light gun, think NAA mini, or something like a Beretta model 21, they are better than nothing. If you get to anything much larger, you are gonna walk funny. I think a fellow carrying in an ankle holster might as well just hike up his pants leg when he's walking around.

Then there's the whole how the heck are you gonna reach it when you need it NOW.

Ankle carry really isn't bad. My G26 weighs 26 oz loaded. I forget its there after a little while. It doesn't effect the way I walk at all.

Access to ankle carry is not always the fastest but it's not that hard to be quick, with some practice.

An NAA mini is a worthless firearm IMHO. A .22 in a package that is really hard to shoot is a bad combo.

I like a ankle holster for a lightweight gun like a S&W Model 37 or Ruger LCP. It is not my first choice for gun carry, but it works for me.

Don't really care for them, but have never tried one. A buddy got one and likes it. He carries a Chiefs Special. Seems to me an awkward draw method, unless you are knocked to ground type thing, also I wear boots most of the time.

I've used ankle holsters for close to 35 years.

Pros:

You can carry concealed in the summer wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

They are pretty comfortable if you have the right holster.

Easy to access the weapon if you are seated in a car.

Cons:

A little harder to get to with any speed and it telegraphs what your doing.

Make sure you have one with a velcro strap to secure the gun even if you have to get a shoe repair shop to alter it. Thumb snaps can come undone. As a young LEO back in the 70s, I had one come out of the holster while in a foot pursuit with a suspect. I was lucky and noticed it when it happened.

I've only ankle carried for the last 10 years or so. I have a Kahr P9 Covert which started out as my BUG. The Covert is no longer made. I like the short grip length and 6 round flush fit mag ( grip is same as PM9 but bbl is 3 1/2" long).

Initially, I bought a Lou Alessi ankle rig but it never seemed to cinch tight enough to be comfortable.

I bought a DeSantis Apache and have used this holster for the past 8 years or so.

The Alessi rig is well made but I needed something for deep concealment with a very secure immovable holster while working in construction.

Alessi holster..

For work, the Apache rested on the top of my boot. For day to day summer carry, the gun also slides down to just above my shoe. I cover the bottom of the holster with my sock if I wear dress shoes.

This mode of carry is less than optimal but is with me more than my belt holstered primary Glock 23. My job has a no gun policy so deep concealment is a must. It is also secure enough to climb ladders all day, crawl into hospital ceilings and building crawl spaces. I have run flat out with no problems and have worn it during a few 16 hour days and hardly know it's there.
The velcro holster has about a 2 year lifespan but at 29 bucks, is the cost of doing business.

It is imperative that if you seriously carry this way that you practice your presentation. While slower than belt presentation, you will be surprised at how quickly you can access the gun WHEN YOU PRACTICE.
It's also better than not having anything. I pocket carry 2 7 round mags without difficulty.

27Hand, you don't need a handgun. Just carry your little friend with you. I've seen them when they get angry, and I sure as heck wouldn't want to tangle with one.

Your buddy got a name?

thats my main concern with it i carry a S&W bodygaurd 380 in it so its fairly light weight and once i found that cheapie its comfortable. my main concern is getting too it.

my dad used to carry one of them during the winter she would sit in the inside pocket of his jacket and every now and then stick her head out of his half zipped jacket and really freak people out.

Btw 27 hand what bread is yours ours had the same coloring but she was the only one i have ever seen.

Kahr P9 Covert ankle carry.

jeepnik,
That is Dobbit, the last of 5 we have had over the past 8 years or so.

The rescue ferret lady told us the coloring was an indicator that he was deaf. We took him there to get him a playmate and ended up with 2 more really sweet girls. They only lived about a year and a half. Jillybean got watermelon year round. Moxie and Dobbit played a lot while they were together. The ones we got were not meat eaters. They do a really cool weasel war dance when provoked.

Tim, I'm not sure what kind he is but he is a big un.

In trying to get marginally back to the OP :) , Speed of presentation is definitely slower than other methods, however having it is more important.
The news in Pittsburgh yesterday was that a shooter went into Western Psych hospital and killed a guy while wounding 6 or 7 others. Two of our apprentices heard the gunfire while they were on an elevator. Neither one was carrying and luckily they were heading up and barricaded themselves into a room while the facility was locked down and police cleared the building. Police ended up killing the guy.
Guess it can happen anywhere, at any time. My super knew I carried and never questioned me or mentioned it.

I worked on a few OR's and ICU at Presby hospital which is really close.

I ankle carried a 340 in an Apache at an office job where discretion was required. The method was ideal for the circumstances, and miles better than being unarmed IMO. Especially in situations with a lot of sitting, it's also not as bad as it might seem. For someone who spends long hours at a desk or on the road, the draw times (with practice of course) could be comparable to IWB.

I ankle carry a S&W 642 snubnose 12 hours a day 5 days a week. I am typically seated in a car or in an office. I think it is easier to draw from my ankle holster than from IWB when seated in a vehicle, probably a toss up when seated in an office chair but most people working in an office are probably wearing casual dress clothes and cannot conceal well IWB.

I use a renegade cozy partner and really like it.

Bear with me,

I have a belt clip and a pocket holster but I am exploring this ankle carry thing as an occasional option for my LCP. Being a lefty I assume the proper position would be inside my right ankle?

Mark

lefty ankle

76,

That would be how most lefties would ankle carry but I have read guys who ankle carry outside their right ankle being a right handed shooter.

I'm righty, carry inside left ankle and have practiced presentations to where I think I can make a respectably quick draw.

Ankle carry is probably the least optimal method of carry but it has it's place.
It assures that you have a gun when belt carry is not feasible.
It assures a deeper concealment for carrying in areas which would be problematic if discovered. I'm not condoning carrying illegally. I did carry when my company had a "no gun " policy. It was a matter of risk and what ramifications I would have to deal with if discovered ( loss of job ).

Try different rigs. My costly Alessi is hardly ever worn. My DeSantis Apache is on right now and is worn from early on to bed time.

The only time I've ever carried on my ankle was back when I was flying the C141B (S&W Model 15 snub). Since I was mostly sitting (at the FE panel) it was much more comfortable than the issued shoulder holster.

I found it much more comfortable to wear the gun on the front of my leg vs the left or right side. Front carry also made it easier to walk without a weird gait, as centering the weight over my foot kept it in line.
