I went to a local gunshop to see about selling or trading two of my guns that I don't use much anymore. I have only been to this store about 4-5 times in 3 years because he doesn't carry much of what I am interested in and his attitude is poor.

I walked in and the owner was talking to two young ladies about buying a handgun for home defense. They had a Kel-Tec P-32, Colt Mustang and a Bersa .380 out and were trying how they felt in the hand. He was the only guy working the counter, it is a small gunstore and I think he is the only one that ever works there.

I waited patiently while he chit-chated with the two women about a bunch of BS and told them many lies about guns and shooting. He told them that women can't handle the recoil of anything bigger than a .380 and they have much more sensistive ears so the noise bothers tham more than men. Thats a new one to me. He also picked up the Kel-Tec P-32 and told them that it was the same caliber as the Bersa .380! I checked to make sure he didn't have a new P3-AT and it was in fact a P-32 and a .380 Bersa.:banghead: I should have said something at this point but I try to mind my own business in gunshops. The women had made it clear several times that they were not going to be buying anything today and they might come back after checking several other stores. I was a customer that was willing to do business right now.

I waited for about 15 mins before he leaned over and asked if I was finding what I needed. I told him that I was interested in trading or selling my two guns. He said, "maybe a trade but if you sell it, I'm gonna rape you". Again, I should have just left but I didn't. I was looking at his handguns for a possible trade but his prices were NUTS! He was asking $650 for a new Glock 19! All his Glocks were over priced and the other guns he had were pretty beaten up and overpriced as well. I wait another 15 mins and just walked out. He kept me waiting for 1/2 hour while he told lies and fed the women a load of BS even though they were not going to buy anything from him.:banghead:

I know for a fact that I will never go in that store again. I really don't know how these guys stay in business. I have never seen anyone buy anything while I was in his shop and the only people that go in there are his buddies that just want to chat. He didn't even want to know what guns I had in my bag! He let me walk out of there without even looking at my guns and making an offer. I could have had a H&K P7 and a SIG 210 that I didn't know the vaule of. He just didn't seem to care either way.

That Firestar is both sad and worrying. I HATE it when crap advice is given to new or novice shooters .... i mean dammit, they go to a store to buy AND get useful advice. Sad!!

For sure don't go back but worrying thing is how much BS daily is this dude spoutin off!? :(

He said, "maybe a trade but if you sell it, I'm gonna rape you".

If I was in that store, I would have walked right then.
If I was one of the gals in that store, I would have told him off,
then walked out.

Maybe I have thin skin........But that was rude, crude and lewd!

He said that rape comment only half joking. I didn't like that comment either, it wasn't funny and kind of made me feel uncomfortable. I sort of half laughed like you do when you are not quite sure how to take a strange comment. In general, this guy's behavior is off putting, he is rude and is everything that anti-gun people love to hate.

Seconded.

A gunstore with a pawnshop mentality.

I'm quite lucky in that the two pawn shops I frequently visit are very courteous and professional. The guys know that I'm not going to buy anything 99.999999% of the time, but they still enthusiastically answer my questions and let me hold the firearms.

Bad experiences suck...there's a shop less than a mile from my house that I can't go to cuz' the STAFF there (not just one guy) are COMPLETE losers. I wanted a price on a Ruger MKII and all they wanted to sell me was a Sig 229. "The Ruger has no stopping power".

"Yes, I agree. But that is NOT what I want it for"

"You'll be unhappy with the little .22 and be back here in a month to trade it in for a bigger gun"

"I already have bigger guns. I WANT a SMALLER gun"........

So now I cheerfully drive far out of my way....even to buy a bag of freaking cleaning patches....

You may be in a BAD gunshop if:

These are some actual quotes from some IQ-challenged gunshop employees/owners I've been amused by:

"Those Blazers will ruin your gun: I've seen them rip out extractors"

"Those CCI Shotshells won't cycle your .38 Special"

Upon returning a malfunctioning pistol to the store where I bought it, "Well,
what do you want US to do about it?"

A customer inquired whether a shop stocked Tokarev caliber ammo..."I never heard of that brand...you must mean MAKAROV" -- and this was the OWNER of the store speaking:neener:

I also have learned a lot and been tolerated by some very decent Gunstore clerks and owners, just to make it clear that I am NOT a weenie! :uhoh:

My experience is with a particular gunstore that has half of the guns NOT MARKED, pretty much dictate any price they felt like. I simply asked the person behind the counter to look at an Artillery Luger and inquired about the price. He responce was, "Are you really serious about the weapon! Because I'm not going to waste my time moving everything around to show you the gun! (BTW he had to move 3 guns and move a sliding door.) My response was, "Well I'm not serious becuase your being such a d@#khead!" and left. If I'm going to get raped on the price, I expect some service and a nice attitude.

The next day I get rapped on a Vectors Uzi instead. :neener:

I really wanted an Artillery Luger.:banghead:

In a similar vein a friend was in a gun shop and saw a Raging Bull that he liked. He inquired about it with the guy behind the counter and got a sneering "What do you want THAT for?" response. Which immediately angered my friend and he dropped his inquiry. The sales loser went back to discussing the relative merits of .22 shorts in bear hunting or something like that.

What is so hard about just being relatively pleasant, possibly knowledgable about where to look up info on the weapon at least, and not being judgemental about the customer? Every time I go into a gun shop it's like I have to over-awe the counter type so that I won't get as much backtalk about how "I don't want THAT, this other thing is much better" when I ask to inspect something. I don't have a whole lot of places to choose from so it's not like I can be too much of a jerk by just leaving without further discussion.

I suppose it should be noted that this phenomena is not isolated to the firearms business. Performance car parts are just as bad, possibly worse. For instance my Mustang has a Vortech supercharger and the input shaft suffered damage from a worn woodruff key that wasn't caught in time. The shaft now has .007 taper rear to front so a new key doesn't help. I can't just call Vortech and say I want an input shaft for such-and-such. Oh No, first I have to overcome the tech type on the phone and prove that I'm not just your average put gas-in-and-go slob, THEN I can get the part I need. I don't want to undergo this needless battle of wills and so the part has remained unordered for months. (See they want you to send the whole unit in for an $800 rebuild which magically turns into "your unit is unrebuildable, but we'll gladly credit you $400 toward the purchase of a new unit for $1800" )

This is not the only such example. Y'all probably haven't noticed just how frequently performance shops close down. Part of it is the counter types have their pet ideas and anyone who doesn't subscribe is ignored at best, belittled at worst. It would be one thing if they were out winning races but these jerks are behind a freakin counter fer chrissake!

I've long sworn that I could make a killing in performance cars by just being courteous towards whoever shows up with whatever heap of junk even if you don't work on it. It seems the same opportunity awaits in firearms. Might even be easier, hmmm...

''Courtesy'' ....... oh my, is that ever lacking in some gun shops. Often the lack of courtesy is ''balanced'' by a surfeit of arrogance.

I have to sing the praises of my local guy .. I have bought, well, errr....... exactly - errr - 'several' ... from him!!!

Every time he just accesses what I am interested in ... lets me check it out ...... and never says anything to try and sway me. He also knows that I am pretty well up on deciding what is or is not an adequate buy.

He then also will ''deal'' .... at least like throwing in some ammo ...... adding some cleaning items etc .... I like that and it's why I give him more business.

He also has been most helpful as my acting FFL when something has to be shipped in which I got thru web etc. No complaints at all.

Gun owners will be the death of themselves...

...if they keep up this attitude. If I were an anti-, I think I'd just wait and let gun ownership die of its own volution. Between:

1) continuing urbanization
2) crime and guns being sensationalized in the media
3) cocky, swaggering, know-it-all jerks like this in the sport

gun ownership will die because no one will want to join.

My own story is of a local guy who has a high-end shotgun shop. Apparently he is a retired cop so I'm assuming he has a pension to fall back on. I know of no onewho has bought anything from him. I've never known anyone who has said he treats them with anything but contempt and/or bravado.

I took my grandfather's Winchester 97 12 ga (E model, takedown, made in 1913) to inquire about having the barrel cut down to 20" so I could use it in cowboy shooting. (before you get mad at me, the original 30" full choke barrel had already been cut down to 26" and had a non functioning Polychoke on it ...so I wasn't ruining the value. The rest of the gun is in mechanically perfect condition.)

This guys says..."That'll cost more to do than the gun is worth"
"Huh?" says I. "How much?"
"Oh at least $150 to $175. That old shotgun is only worth $50 at most. I'll take it off your hands if you wanna just get rid of it"
"Uh thanks mister, I'll think about it"

:cuss: Shark!

We've been lucky with the shop around here. Good store, clean, low prices, nice, tolerant people who will tell the truth, very good store...

catch 22 it seems like.

one i go to has a bit higher prices than others but there helpful an polite. but there brand choosy.

that an there consigments are outrageous.

couple others are cheaper but a little ruder cuz im not a "Regular" that an im 25. so there probably figuring im window shopping. (course who buys a car without a test drive or popping the hood)

oh well
