As I mentioned in another thread, I picked up a 10mm Compact Polymer Witness. I had a chance to shoot it over the weekend and love it. It's accurate and ate everything from my mid powered reloads to full power 220 grain hard cast ammo from Buffalo Bore. The one question I have is regarding the slide movement. When shooting it, it feels like the slide slams into the frame on it's way back, it hesitates for a fraction of a second and them slams into the frame again when returning to battery. Is this normal for Witnesses? I have looked for a stiffer recoil springs and have found them for Witnesses, but not the compact version.

I have a older metal frame compact witness and hot 10mm feels that way.
Makes you think the slide is going to fly off.
I couldn't find heaver springs either.
Mostly shoot soft 10mm through it and keep heavy loads for defense.

I'll shoot a little more of the full power hard cast ammo through it to make sure it functions well with it as it's what I'll carry as a woods gun, but other than that I'll shoot low to mid power reloads. I don't want to batter it unnecessarily.

Mine seems fine with mid level loads.
Does yours send brass into low orbit?
With out a spotter I might find just one empty out of a mag 20+ feet away.

About 20 feet is right. I don't mind as long as it's in the same area. The slamming off the frame wasn't as bad with mid power loads, but it was still there.

I have a full size Witness .45/.22 which doesn't exhibit the issues the OP describes, but I do have a Baby Eagle .45 that does something like this. Not sure why certain guns would do this and others of the same type don't, but I'll start to worry when parts fail I guess.

You really need that double spring setup to take off some of the beating. I believe the newer ones have that, right?

I would look at maybe higher powered springs, perhaps even a stiffer hammer spring. Unfortunately those would make the slam home dramatic still.

Owning several 10mm pistols I firmly believe it's best in a hunting configuration with something like a glock 40 or witness hunter/competition pistol. I really do need to order some new high power mag springs to try to get my full steel 2002 wonder finish witness to run reliably....or I could consider selling all my 10's and going for an hk usp 45 and sometimes run 45 super through it...

I know it will never happen, but if HK were to ever come out with a 10mm, I'd be on it so fast, it'd make people's heads spin.

I does have a double spring. I didn't think about the stiffer spring making the slam home worse. As long as this is normal for the gun I'm going to leave it as is.
