I started out in an east Dayton, Ohio Boy Scout troop with a great Scoutmaster named Howard Norris. I moved a year later with my father and ended up in another troop which wasn't as disciplined.
That next troop would introduce me to my longest friendship I've ever had, but it would also introduce me to politics.
The third year at summer camp, the fellow scout chosen for the Order of the Arrow was none other than the Scoutmaster's son. Every other scout of our troop had wanted someone else. We protested even going to the OA because of it.
I'm sure that if I had never moved, I would have obtained Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow. I did have a great mentor in Mr. Norris.
Unfortunately, not all Scoutmasters are equal in their ability. The BSA is a great organization and I wish that I had not gotten away from it when I was a teenager, but I moved once again and decided not to pursue it any longer in the new town. Partying and girls (and even partying with girls) were more important to me by then.
