I was short on pistol ammo and went to my local dealer to see what he had to offer. Among the stuff I bought were Brazilian CBC Magtech 115gr JHP in 9x19. I was told that in recent test they showed to be pretty precise. At 170€/1000 they aren't much more expensive than normal FMJs.

So far I've been using Magtech 95gr JSP-flat for competions, but they proved to be unreliable in my Glock 17L, causing failures to feed due to the short OAL. For home defence I'm relying on Federal EFMJs, which are a bit pricey and which I therefore haven't tested as much as I'd like.

Now these (for me) new Magtech JHPs might double as a suitable ammo for both competition (allowing me to test it for precision and reliability) and HD. Magtech's homepage lists them as ammo for recreation and competition, but they are hollow points after all.

So my question is: Has anyone done any ballistic testing with that stuff? Gelatin or wet phonebooks?

Thank you!

Hello. The closest I can get on the Magtech JHP is their 124-gr. Guardian Gold std. pressure 9mm load.

It fed reliably in 2 Browning Mk III Hi Powers.

Accuracy was satisfactory.

Average velocity: 1106 ft/sec

In 115-grs, I have fired their FMJ; perhaps it would be close in velocity to the 115-gr. load you mention?

Magtech 115-gr FMJ fired from Hi Power: 1161 ft/sec

Fired into water, the Magtech JHP's in 9mm have usually fragmented quite severely. Into super-saturated newspring, expansion is normally as seen above. I don't trust this ammunition of anything "serious" yet.

Best.

Magtech uses 115gr JHPs in both their Sport and Recreation as well as their Personal Protection series. I wonder whether they'd bother to make two different 9mm 115gr JHP bullets. If not, what could be the difference between a 115gr JHP target and 115gr JHP defensive load? Besides powder charge and primers. Perhaps marketing them in countries where hollow-points for defense are not legal, while hollow-points for target shooting are legal?
