finally decided it was time to complete my last ar stripped lower. got the armalite parts kit into it, and have the stock ordered, so now i'm ready for an upper.

i'm thinking i need a light ar to go w/ my varminter carbine, so i'm liking the bushmaster 16" superlite: www.bushmaster.com/shopping/uppers/pre-ban/bura2b16sl.asp

i don't think the barrel is threaded for a flash suppressor (which disappoints me), but other than that, i think it is the way to go.

anybody have any positives or negatives to offer about this upper? what other options are available in the $500 range?

I had a factory bushmaster superlight with that exact upper.

I'm sure that they will thread the barrel and and a FS if you call them. Now that the ban is over I would also want a bayonet lug just on general principle.

It was a VERY light weight upper, and functioned very well. Not that there was "a lot" of recoil to it by any means, but the very light weight combined with the bare muzzle added up to more felt recoil than any other AR I have ever fired.... but it sure was nice to carry around.

8-12 weeks sucks. i'm ready to do this now... is there a faster alternative?

recoil... well, i'm not much into ar's; actually i just have them on principle, and were it not for the awb i probably would have none. the ones i have only have maybe 100 rounds thru them at the most, and i have one that has never been fired. i'm into bolt-guns because i get off on long range precision and power. thus, i really like things like the 300 win mag, 338 win mag, 7 rem mag (see a pattern??)... also, as a hunter, i prefer light rifles (as in light 300 win mag, etc). so, i really am not concerned about recoil... however, it might be fun to compare recoil notes between my heavy 16" ar and this new light one (especially since there ain't much padding on those 6-pos collapsible stocks). thanks for the input.

Bushie can make that up with a threaded end and a lug (pre ban)
but on a 16" upper the bayonet mounts 1.5 inches to far to the rear

DPMS also makes a lightweight barrel upper as does J&T distributing. I think DPMS can do a chrome lined barrel as an upgrade for $50. J&T does not offer a chromelined barrel in their light weight. Model 1 Sales also has a lightweight upper with no chromelined option, but I have read mixed reports on their product and customer service.
