I'm active duty Coast Guard and looking at transferring to a cutter in these areas. Any input on ranges, range costs or housing and areas to avoid would really be appreciated. San Diego is really tempting because of the weather, the surf kayaking opportunities and the chance to do some winter camping in Mexico, but I have always wanted to give the Great Lakes a shot. Anyone have any input on Pascagoula?

Thanks Malone

Tell me what you think of the area, especially post Katrina. I would be stationed on the Naval Base even though I am Coast Guard. Besides shooting I like fishing, hunting, kayaking and back packing or camping. Is it pretty easy to get to a rural area to do any of these?

There's a lot of fishing around Sault. Ste Marie. Even in winter there's ice fishing. :) Lake Superior and the St. Mary's River are big, but there is also a lot of rivers and streams with trout, bass, and pike.

I have fired benchrest .22 rifle matches at the Chippewa County Shooting Asociation. The web address is www.upshooting.com.
They also have Practical rifle and pistol shooting, trap, Cowboy Action, and other programs. The range sponsors a gun show each spring too. They are an active group.

I was supposed to go over for a three gun match a week ago Saturday, followed by a benchrest .22 match. Gas prices and bills ambushed me and I had to cancel the trip. I was disappointed as the shooters I met at the range there are good people.

I'm a member of CCSA, nice range. 25, 100, 200 yard, trap, skeet archery.

Half of the time I go there I have the place to myself. The USCG actually uses the range for training on ocassion.

There is also plenty of federal land around where you can hunt and shoot.

I'm in Mobile, AL. Not too far from Pascagoula.

The gulf coast is such a beautiful area. TONS of fishing, hunting and outdoor activities.

The aformentioned range is a 1000 yard range near the AL/MS line.

It's private and is like $70/year. My boss and I are planning on joining soon. It does 25, 50, 100, 200, 400, 600, and 1000 yards.

Another thing - IDK if your staying on base but property is CHEAP. Comparitivley priced, homes are 1/10th the price of that of CA. And with more land. There are almost no property taxes (mine last year was $300)

Here are a couple of pics of what some of the Gulf coast is like. This is in Pensacola, but Mobile and Pascagoula are similar.

I was stationed in San Diego from 89-91 on the small boats and loved it(can you say Station vacation San Diego:D ) When i was there it was pricey for apt. and houses were expensive,of course it gets some what cheaper the farther away you get from the ocean.

my vote would be for Michigan but thats me.

BTW what is your Rating, mine was MK/Boarding officer
