I have some old rifles which I'm attached too which have their crown slightly pitted...a little bit rough to the touch.
The best way I can describe it is like the surface of an orange peel.
I do not want to re-cut the crown because I like the old stile rounded one and because is not worth the expense.
I was wondering if there is some very simple method to try to polish the crown using a combination of steel wool, abrasive paste, lapping compound/sand paper by hand.
There is not bluing left so I do not care about bluing...I want just to get that surface a bit polished and smoother.

Thank you!!!

Eh... doing it by hand I'd be worried about making it uneven. If you have a lathe or something, turn a pilot as close to the land diameter as you can get, so it fits snugly in the bore, then have a wider area above it that contacts the crown that you can put lapping compound or something on.

Fine valve grinding compound/Clover Compound and a marble. Coat the marble with the compound and roll it on the crown with the palm of your hand like you would knead a ball of clay. Polishes out the dings and nicks quick. I use the little marbles for rifles and the big shooter marbles for shotguns :).

Just my .02,

Move the drill in a figure 8 pattern so as not to recrown unevenly. I did it & it worked great. Shove a patch or 3 in your bore to keep the grinding compuond out.
