Can you try and like, write this a bit more clear? I am gonna try and answer what I think you're asking, but I am unsure whether I get it.
Plenty tough, Bersas have a good rep. Mine was great, but I can't say I racked up a ton of rounds, either.

I think you're saying your wife can't effectively work the slide on a Cougar, right? Some of that may be technique, since at least on my wife's gun the slide is pretty par for the course. Not super hard to work, not easy, either. Check into the sticky somewhere here where it says how to buy a gun for your wife. (Hint: Don't. Let her pick.)
As for the trigger, it's about the same as the Bersa. At least t was on mine. 8)

The trick to easy slide manipulation is not to try to pull it back. Instead, hold the gun close to the body and grasp the slide with the support hand, but with the hand oriented more to the rear of the gun, kind of with the muzzle pointed out from under the wrist if you can picture what I'm saying. Then, use the strong hand (the one holding the gun by the grip/frame) to push the gun away from the body while holding the slide still.
Much easier to push away from the body than to pull toward it.
Don't discount the PT-22 if she handles it well. There are few, if any, bad guys that would run or otherwise cease to be a threat when countered with a centerfire defense that would stay and soldier on with their attack against a well-executed rimfire defense. Assuming a non-risky lifestyle, I'd bet your wife could live ten lifetimes without meeting any of them.
I own the Bersa Thunder 380, and it is indeed a great, sturdy, and reliable defensive platform.

Edit: I see from another thread you are 77 years of age, and she is 60. It doesn't sound like you're going to be at risk for a dangerous lifestyle, and firearms may not become a pastime for you. However, kudos for wanting to take responsibility for the safety of your spouse and yourself. As I said, if she's doing well with the Taurus, she should be fine for quite some time. More than a fair share of bad guys have been driven off or put into the ground with "Granny's little .22". Training should be geared toward situational awareness and rapid response as much as, if not more than, actual marksmanship.

Sounds like a revolver may suit your, and her, needs better. Small .380 autos have heavy recoil springs by design.

Still trying to interpret of which you speak. But, I will try.
My Bersa Thunder 9 UC Pro was easy to rack the slide using the rear sight and a table edge, or my holster, etc. Trigger pull was a bit creepy and a bit inconsistent in DA, Double Action, mode but absolutely great in SA, Single Action mode. A fine, extremely accurate and dependable pistol that was my "truck gun" until I had to sell her for a long distance move. And takedown was super easy. I only have the use of one arm, so... The .380 model I am unfamiliar with, unfortunately,

It sounds like to though, your wife is probably needing a revolver. An SA-DA type, so she can pull the hammer back and cock it for SA mode, or just start pulling the trigger for DA mode.

You said you are 77 with a failing heart, and no experiance or interest in guns..
If she can't lift a 6 pound rifle, or rack the slide on any common handgun, or pull the trigger on a DA revolver?
She would be in more danger of an accidental shooting or a home invader taking a gun away from her and using it then not having a gun she is too weak to use and maintain control of!!
Once again, it sounds to me like your wife needs a big can of pepper spray.
And you need to stop trying to arm her if she is to weak to lift a long gun, and too feeble to operate a pistol or revolver.
Any gun she can't use or practice with is more dangerous to you & her then the potential bad guy.
That might never come anyway!!

sorry to derail but this statement is confusing. Beretta made an M1A? I assume you meant M14 but that leads me to more confusion.

In post #3, he states that she has a Taurus PT-22 and "can shoot it." I see nothing that indicates she is an incapable, feeble, hazard to all around her who should not be permitted to exercise the same self-defense options that you would fight for.
