Anyone else still bare the scare?

On my first Pheasant hunt my brother rounded up a Winchester 1897 12 gauge for me to use. It was a bit long for me and when that first bird flushed I'll never forget the pain it inflicted on me. How many others out there bare a inch long scar about an inch and a half below the bottom of your thumb on your trigger hand?

I have many Winchesters in my collection but have never "found the love" for the old 97!

I couldn't figure out what this topic was about until I opened it. heh.

Bare the scare? ***?

But all jest aside I have no scars.

I have them on both hands....

I made a hogs leg (legal length) out of an old steavens 12 gauge.

On every shot the recoil would drive the spur of that hammer into the top of my thumb.

Seperated the foolhardy from the pansey's real quick ;)

The only scars are from 1911 hammer bite.

I do recall the first time that my Dad took me bird hunting. I was 9 years old.
He was carrying his Stevens single shot 12 ga.

He cocked that 'stick' and let loose on a quail.

"Yee-Owwwwww!"

My Dad turned around and showed me his hand. It was bleeding (quoting him) "Like a stuck pig!"

He put down the shotgun, and didn't pause two seconds.
He grabbed my T shirt and ripped it along the bottom, and wrapped his hand with it.

He had gotten the web of his right hand between the hammer and the firing pin.
It literally made a gash in the web of his hand.

Dad hasn't fired that shotgun, since.

The only gun related scar I have,is from a crow I shot.I went to pick it up at it locked it's beak on my hand between thumb and finger. The damm thing would not let go,I had to rip it off with skin and all.I bled like a stuffed pig for 1 hour,by the way the crow died quickly after that.

No mishaps around guns for me, but I have forgotten that knives are tools, not toys, on a couple occasions and have some scars to show for it.

I've been shooting 1911s for almost fifty years without being bitten by one until one day ....

I was shooting with an acquaintance who would shout "Ouch!" after every shot with his. After he had exhausted the first magazine I asked what was going on. He said "Hammer bite gets me every time."

So I said what every redblooded American gun owner would say under the circumstances: "You don't know how to hold that gun. Let me show you." He gave me the gun, said "I would be eternally grateful to you for a lesson in how to shoot my own gun," put on the most evil smile I had seen in a long time, and stood by to watch me take my first shot.

"OUCH!" I shouted as the hammer delivered a viscious bite into the web of my hand.

The gun's owner grinned from ear to ear and said: "Very instructive. Are you ready to give me my second lesson?"

I muttered something unrepeatable and slinked off to get some antiseptic and a Band Aid.

Used to shoot the 97 a lot and always liked it. No scars but never got used to the smallish trigger guard ( a tight fit when wearing gloves ) and, because the checkering on the hammer spur got worn pretty smooth, lowering the hammer on a loaded chamber got a mite dicey (always hunted with it in the half-cock position).

I can't recall ever hurting myself whilst shooting a gun, but the slide rails of 1911s, and the sideplates on '66 winchester clones have taken their toll.
