Note how often shots don't have to be fired? :) If they are fired, note how often mere misses and poor hits) suffice? Note that "mere" .22's, .25's, .32's, 380's, 38 snubs, etc suffice a lot of the time? How can that be true, if you "need" a 12 ga for home defense?

Read Cirillo's book. Out of 280 armed robbers caught in the act and cornered, less than 1 in 7 made the cops shoot them. The Annual Crime Survey says that 2/3rds or more of attackers do not use a gun. The FBI'S Uniform Crime Report says that over 1/2 of all gunfights occur at 10 ft and less. At what range can you justify actually shooting a guy who aint got a gun, hmm? 10 ft or less. Yes, you can DRAW if he's got a knife, etc, at 10 yds or so, but you'd better not fire while he's not in full charge at you, more than a few feet away.

The case is made, actually, for extreme speed of ccw draw, and normally not having to fire, if you get your gun pointed at them in time, and have them notice it. Darkness, drunkenness, etc, can preclude that, you know.
