I'm thinking of picking one of these up. Anyone got one since Crusader Gun Company started producing them? How's the quality? Easy to fit on the front pocket? I've had a hard time convincing the local gun shops that they are still made much less finding one in stock.

I shot Backups in both 45acp and 380, I did not care for either. They both felt heavy and they both had very bad triggers. I would not buy one at any price. A far better inexpensive 45acp is the Bersa Thunder 45, I trust my life to one and I own a bunch of more expensive pistols. Regards, Richard

I had one by AMT. I carried it in a pocket holster in jeans (and other) front pocket. Surprisingly accurate for just a sight-channel in the slide. Trigger is indeed very (like maybe 16 lbs) heavy, but with much dryfiring, I could make good hits (3-4") firing almost as fast as my 1911 at 7-10yds.
There may be smaller hideaway pistols out there, but none in .45acp. Nobody ever knew I was carrying if I did'nt tell them.
A LOT of people are gonna flame on this pistol. But mine fed everything from fmjs to 200gr swc's. I sold mine because I got in a tight spot after moving to Wi, where we can't cc anyway. When we can, I'll prob buy another.

it's also huge compaired to a AMT backup 45,
my Backup 45 had been worked on before I got it (ported and hardcromed) I had light strike problems until I replaced firing pin and spring(previous owner had ground on it and looked like a bic pen spring)
now it's 100% I've used 185 Golden sabers and have reciently switched to the Taurus copper ammo with the barns bullet.the stuff is nasty its minute of pie plate out to 15 yards or so.yes the trigger is heavy but you don't worry about an AD if it goes bang you had to mean it
.If you want a 45 for pocket carry there's nothing else in its class.

I used to have a DAO Backup in .45 and still have several in 9 mm and .380. I bought them all new back in the 80's when they were still being manufactured in California. All of mine have worked flawlessly and I still carry them from time to time. They are heavy for their size and have quite the trigger pull.

The AMT backups were always spotty, but mine worked well enough to carry the .45 and .380 until better guns came out -- Kahr P40 and Kel-Tec P32. Which have since been updated to PM40 and P3AT.
Look at the Kahr CW series, much better trigger and significantly lighter. The AMT backup pistols filled a niche in their day, but their time has passed IMHO.
While the AMT Backup 380 would fit in a pocket, it was way too heavy for any of my pockets.

I had one that worked. It was a nasty little cuss in spite of the heavy weight but was super easy to conceal and very flat. Would I buy another? No, but I'm keeping mine.
I've always thought the design had unrecognized potential. It's possible to get them working reliably - mine and others out there are proof. It's just a matter of the company making them doing the job right the first time (and this might make it too expensive for many/most people).
Who is this Crusader Gun Company? If they are making them, I haven't seen one, nor have I heard of them. Last I heard, High Standard in TX was making parts and the guns (though again, I haven't ever seen one).

In 2004, a new company, the Crusader Group, was formed. They bought the assets of High Standard, AMT, Firearms International and Arsenal Line. I have actually seen a new manufacture DAO Backup, and it was marked on the slide: High Standard, Houston, Texas.

Workmanship better or about the same?
I qualified with one of the AMT .45's when they first came out. The trigger sting was so brutal that I barely made it thru the 65 rounds or so. They were also rather fussy regarding ammuntion. High quality factory stuff worked fine, but cheap fodder and reloads were spotty.

I found the gun to be reliable with factory full power ammunition as well as +P stuff. It choked badly on light target 200 gr. FMJ reloads that worked just fine in everything else.

I have an original AMT Back-up .45 DAO. It works reliably with good ammo. It's quite adequate for it's intended purpose - a back-up for a carry gun.
