The price is on par with WWB but with every 300 rounds you get an ammo can so I was thinking about getting some. Anyone have experience with it? It's available in FMJ and round-nose lead. Is round nose lead the same as FMJ just without the copper jacket?

It's made by Ultramax. I've shot some Ultramax .38 Special 158 grain LSWC (bought it at Dick's Sporting Goods, though). It went bang every time I pulled the trigger and was good enough for rapid DA practice in my 3" GP-100.

I have some Ultramax .223 55 grain FMJ that I picked up at Cabela's last fall, but haven't had the chance to run any through my Mini-14 yet. Visual inspection revealed no defects. If it works like the .38s, I'll be happy. IIRC, they had a sale and I got 300 rounds for $39.99 ( but no ammo can, darn it).

How much are you paying for your WWB? I pay 10.96 per 100 for 9mm and 14.98 per 100 for .40. That comes out to be about 10 and 15 bucks cheaper respectively per 300 than the comparative ammo from Cabela's and that's before shipping. That doesn't really seem like a great deal to me for target ammo and we haven't even brought CCI Blazer into the equation yet!

Edit: Admittedly though there is somewhat of a cool factor in buying a military ammo can packed with loose ammo!

I get WWB for $11.77 with tax (11.77 cents per round), I live within driving distance of Cabela's so I just have to pay tax, no shipping. It comes to about $150 for 1200 rounds (12.5 cents per round) so I don't mind paying the extra .7 cents/rd for four ammo cans. $0.007*1200=$8.40 for four cans.

Yes and no.
Trust me on this,,,,you DON'T want commercial reloads made using lead bullets. Go with the FMJ.
99.99999% of the time, I favor (and recommend) lead over jacketed bullets. I feel lead is superior in every way to jacketed rounds.(for most applications)

There's only a few exceptions.

One exception is a commercial reload.

The reason is pretty basic. In order to keep costs down, commercial reloaders use the fastest burning powders they can, and the cheapest bullets using the cheapest lubes. Fast burn + cheap lube + soft (and often mis-sized) bullets add up to severe leading - even at modest velocities.

Honestly, I feel this is where so many people get the bad impression that all lead - leads.

I picked up some 158gr reloads and they pretty much did exactly what Hal described. Those bullets leaded the heck out of my barrel and were stinky to boot. After shooting 250 rounds it took forever to get all the leading out. A few .357Mag loads did the trick on my next range session.

Earlier this year, my cousin bought a few hundred rounds of Cabela’s remanufactured 230 grain .45 ACP FMJ for his Kimber Royal. It was absolute junk: dirty, scarred brass, grossly less accurate, several failures to fire, stovepipes, and so forth. Significantly, this Kimber has had NO problems when using Winchester ‘White Boxâ€, S&B, and Federal American Eagle, so it’s a certainty that the Cabela’s ammunition was the problem.

1000 rd of 9mm jacketed in the last 6 months,(it was on sale), shot OK, no failures of any kind. BUT, I'd only buy it again if it was on sale, because I can get WWB, blazer, etc cheaper.

cabelas

I ordered 300 rounds of 38 special and shot them without any problems and the ammo cans are cool, pretty authentic with crazy amrkings on them. I'll order some 9mm in the spring and give them a try.

i have bought a lot of cabela's bulk ammo with ammo box. haven't had any probs with it yet. good stuff.

Well this sucks. I had my roommate swing by Cabela's on his way down from MI to pick up the ammo. He handed them a printout from their website with the FMJ part number. Not only did I get overcharged $20 but they gave him the lead nosed rounds! They also gave me some big cheap plastic cans instead of .50 cal steel cans. I'm gonna call them but I'm pretty sure they won't let me return it.:banghead: :cuss:

If I'm stuck with it, is there a chance some ranges won't let me shoot this? Or is it just steel jacketed that's not allowed?

I called the 800 number and they can't take back ammo via mail so I was told to call the retail store direct but they're closed for the night. Guess we'll see what happens tomorrow. GRRR

Just called them. You can return ammunition one time, after that you're SOL. The lady told me they have to destroy all returned ammunition due to federal law. Kind of a waste but it's their own fault. Now I just need to find time to go up there.
