A while ago I posted a query about aperture sizes, and wondered whether a smaller aperture would lead to better accuracy:

I just thought I would follow up with my own observations. I have a Winchester 1894 30-30 with a XO ghost ring, but I had heard that XO had some rings that were threaded for Williams peep apertures. I bought the threaded ghost ring and Williams' smallest aperture, and went out to the range to see if the small aperture made any difference.

With the Williams aperture in the ghost ring, I could keep the shots in the 10-ring on a military 100-yard target, and one out of 4 or so would hit X. With the Williams aperture out, and using only the ghost ring, my groups opened up to the 9 ring and occasionally out to 8 (this is holding the forestock on a block of wood).

But, using the Williams aperture, the light coming into my eye was noticeably reduced, even on a sunny day. If it were dusk and I were hunting, I don't doubt that it would be more difficult to see the quarry. Also, my view overall was reduced, and I definitely feel it would be harder to see and hit an animal walking through foliage.

My only other observation was that my new front post, flat across the top with a white stripe down the middle (XO again), made it much easier to see exactly what I was aiming at. No more round front sights for me.

Incidentally, XO does not advertise the threaded ghost ring, and there were only 25 left when I ordered mine a month ago, so if you are interested, you better call soon and ask whether any are left.
