I have a Colt flat top. Sometimes the charging handle doesn't lock. Could someone here post a closeup picture of the part of the upper receiver where the charging handle locks? I have a RRA upper and the part where the charging handle locks has a milled out section for this . My Colt doesn't have anything close to what the RRA upper has.

The picture is just like my RRA upper but my Colt doesn't have the milled out section at all. I guess I'll give Colt a call. Thanks for the picture.

Are you talking about the recess that the latch locks into, or the little ramped portion prior to that recess?

Wow.

Definately something that an ar15 buyer doesn't run into all that often.

Have you actually fired your Colt upper? The upper receiver SHOULD have the latch recess in order for the charging handle to lock.

Seen it. I /think/ it was a colt again. They just missed a step in the process.

Funny part for the one I saw, was that the shooter didn't notice until after he pulled the trigger. Once. The thing rebounded and whacked him in the nose. Apparently, pretty hard. He was not happy.

Is this possible? I thought the bolt carrier didn't affect the charging handle when it goes back. :)

Prolly a combination of friction and gas blowing back into the region as the bolt moves backward. Remember that the end of the gas tube is pretty high in the upper, close to the charging handle.

Yes, it happens. I had an original Carbon 15 (pre-Bushmaster) that the recess had worn enough that it would not latch. It would cycle the charging handle back but not consistently.

This is a new Colt Model MT6731. The upper receiver is marked M4 and it has the M4 feed ramps. I have shot it and when the bolt is locked back by an empty mag the charging handle would release. I probably won't be able to call Colt until Tues. but I will let everyone here know what happens.
