I put together my first ar-15 last night. Doublestar lower, RRA lpk, and stag m4 upper. Anyway, I went out and shot 30 rounds when I was done. It functioned flawlessly, except for one problem. The bolt won't stay open after the last shot. I'm using brand new USGI mags. I noticed that the bolt release lever is pretty stiff in the lower and doesn't really spring back and forth like I think it should. Should I remove the lever and file it down slightly or what?

Try working it back and forth a few hundred times, see if it loosens up. If not, at least that'll leave marks to show you where to stone the release. If you dismantle it, make sure the release pivots freely on the pin, might just have to chase the hole with a drill bit, or stone the pin a little.

When you use the stone, or file, or grinding wheel, one bit of advice: Always work on the cheapest part first. So, leave the receiver alone. Unless you see an obvious burr in the area.

Regards.

bolt stop

see if the bolt stop is free before you install the roll pin. Its possible the roll pin hole is too small and hanging up on the pin. it should rock freely. an empty mag inserted into the lower alone should raise it up without depressing the mag follower at all.

I've had the same problem on my last 2. All it really took was me using a drill bit the same size as the roll pin to remove the parkerizing (spelling?) from the hole in the bolt stop. If that doesn't fix it then a little sanding (not filing) of the sides of the bolt stop will loosen it up enough to make it work.

Have a good one,
Dave

The release ended up being just a hair too big for the reciever. The roll pin was not binding up. I took it to my local smith. He polished it down and reblued it. All is well now. Thanks.
