In looking around at AR-15s, I've noticed a couple, both Colt, that are stamped:

Code:
     RESTRICTED
 MILITARY/GOVERNMENT
LAW ENFORCEMENT/EXPORT
      USE ONLY

I've seen another, also a Colt, where the description includes "LE marked" which I'd guess means it has that same stamp. As far as I can tell, these are otherwise civilian legal firearms.

Does this stamp have any significance, and if so, what would that be?

Guns and magazines that are stamped like that are left overs from the 1994-2004 federal Assault Weapons Ban (often just called the AWB). Unless you live in a state that has a state law ban on such weapons or hi-cap mags, the markings are just a neat novelty. They have no legal significance anymore.

What I've often wondered is does anybody ever get hassled by LEOs who are ignorant of the meaning of the markings?

I'm sure there are alot of LEO's that would see that marking and just assume that its illegal. It doesnt help that quite a few LEO's are not pro-gun people, with the "only the gov should have guns" mindset.

It would really stink to get your rifle confiscated... and from what I've heard, once a gun gets confiscated, getting it back is nearly impossible (even if you've done absolutely nothing unlawful).
