I'm totally new to the AR 15 world(bought my first one Wednesday) and after some research, I think I have decided on the scope I want:
http://www.riflescopes.com/products/SS10X42/super_sniper_10x42_30mm_rifle_scope.htm

I'm not exactly sure on the details you need for my question, so I'll just list everything the papers say: RRA LAR-15 RFL BLUE TACTICAL CAR A4. I'm not sure what the detachable piece on top of the flat top is called(maybe a tac mount) but it has a rail for a scope, and the aperture, elevation knob, and windage knob on it.

My question is this...If I put that scope on it, will I have to say byebye to my iron sights, or is there some kind of mount I can put on it to be able to still use them when I want to?

Scopes are for oooold people :p

Get a red dot, join the 2000's:p
Seriously, look very hard at ACOG, Eotech, Aimpoint
most of them will co-witness with a backup Iron sight and the carry handle that you have now, just comes off.
It's very slick and automatically has a back up built in (with the BUIS --back up iron sights)

ACOGs even magnify.

You can do it either way.

red dot with BUIS's that cowitness

Or a scope sans sights

If you go with a scope, I'd suggest something like a Leupold 1.5x5 instead of the big one. With the scope set to 1.5, you can pretty much shoot it like it was iron sights, but have plenty of power for longer shots when set at 5x.

I agree with BozemanMT and I'm pretty much on my way to "oooold people" :) For an all around gun, the red dot is the best way to go.

if you go with a traditional scope and still want irons sights you could opt for a JP Rifles short range tactical sight mounted in the 2 o'clock position on your handguard. JP Rifles sells an free float handguard that will allow you to do this:

Well are there any good-quality red dots that magnify, for under 450?

There is a bunch of "stuff" I have in mind to buy for this rifle, and spending 600-1200 on a red dot is going to put a damper on it.

Last summer, I went w/ an Eotech 512 on my RRA middy that has been very user friendly and surprisingly accurate....recommend it highly!

Aimpoints run around $380-$400+, depending on what you want. I dont think I'd want one that magnified though.

you could find a used EOTech for $250-300 and then save up and get an aimpoint 3X magnifier to put behind it. Don't really remember how much those are but they are atleast as expensive as the eotech... new.

Here's my scope setup. I was looking looking into all the fancy radioactive and battery powered units available, but I realized that I will probably never shoot my rifle at night or even in low light. The only covert operation I will ever be involved in is calling in sick to work to go rabbit hunting. I chose a Weaver 1-3 variable on Warne Maxima quick detach ultra high rings. I also have a YHM flip fear sight. I paid $135 for the scope and $50 for the rings.

What kind of groups would be plausible with a eotech holosight at say 150-200 yards? Could I hit coke cans?

What brand would you recommend?(question is for anyone)

Matt, your setup sounds just about like what I want. I expect to use my AR for plinking and hunting, so some magnification will be useful. I don't need night vision, and although I like red dot sights, and may eventually get one, I'm not going to be engaging in combat too often with my AR (and if I am, I assume my iron sights will be good enough). Thanks for the info. I'm saving this for when I buy my upper.

well the dot is 1MOA, so you do your part and you should be able to keep within 2 to 3 MOA.
I've seen it done easily, even with M14's.
Yes, you can hit a coke can and quickly.

Eotech
ACOG
Aimpoint.

Everything else you'll buy 2 or 3 times as it breaks, comes apart, loses zero, etc.

Check arfcom's equipment exchange. Aimpoints and Eotechs are right around $300 or so with mounts.

Sightron Electronic Scope

Midway and Brownells has a new "red dot" with six different reticles and 11 intensity adjustments for around 209.00- 230.00. I have a 3x9x42 [199.00] on mine is very accurate.

Alright bozeman, you talked me into it. I'm too young to be called oooold:D
300 isnt a bad price at all, especially with mounts. I thought the eotech holosights were 380-450.

I understand what MOA means, but with these red dots, what does this mean?:

1 x4 MOA
2 x1 MOA
1 x2 MOA
2 x2 MOA

LOL arfcom=ar15.com, yeah I'm retarded, thanks

Thanks guys

I have the EOTECH 512 on my RRA Elite Car A4 and am really happy with it.

I am curious if anyone has any experience with the EOTECH 3x magnifier? They look really cool and having the option to magnify for hunting would be great if it really works. :what:

The magnifiers work well.

I've had Aimpoint's 3x on a Rock River M4gery "Entry Tactical" behind an EOTech, and used a friend's setup with EOTech and an Aimpoint magnifier on a 50 caliber "carbine". We just got some of the EOTech magnifiers, and they're very good also, plus they come in 3x and 4x.

The magnifiers are very rugged and they seem to clear up the reticle, so it looks awesome, no matter if you're using an EOTech, an Aimpoint, or one of the Trijicon Tripower sights.

Using an Aimpoint on a QRP mount with spacer, you can just squeeze in an AMRS#40-L or 40-P fold-down rear sight plus the Aimpoint magnifier on the "TwistMount" (also with a QRP spacer) all on the receiver rail. Adding a forend top rail would make it a nice easy fit with an EOTech sight and either of the magnifiers.

Caveat: The EOTech magnifier mount we have is taller than the standard 511/512/552 sights, as it matches up with the new model 553 which is 7 mm taller. It still works with the previous models, but is sub optimum as it is 7 mm above center. The Aimpoint TwistMount aligns nicely with the EOTech and the Aimpoint Comp/QRP/QRP spacer. The two companies' magnifiers do NOT use the same mounts. The Aimpoint 3x mag. mounts with a 30 mm ring or with a custom mount, and the EOTech uses its own mount.

I've also been impressed with the ACOG 4x model TA01, using it out to about 500 yards with a Colt Match Target A2 HBAR. It too will fit on the receiver rail along with an ARMS low profile folding sight.

Pop cans at 100 have no chance-- they're aluminum confetti. At 200 they're a challenge for most shooters who are not into Benchrest, but certainly if you do your job you'll hit them.
