I am really trying to decide what direction to go with my AR.

I have the Spikes lower all built out, but hesitating on the upper.

I really will be shooting 22lr most of the time, since i can shoot it in my backyard.

So my question is, do I get the dedicated 22lr upper, or the 22 conversion

Pros for conversion: tiny, fits into the bag, costs less, and you are training on the EXACT upper your "real" rifle is on.

Cons: worse accuracy, but I cant get anyone to really pin down how bad this is. 4" at 100 I keep hearing.

Basically if the accuracy is anywhere near decent, the conversion bolt has quite a few plusses.

If I have to get an entire upper, I might think about making my 'centerfire' upper a 9mm, for gun games at my local club and home defense.

But I hear this requires a different hammer type?

yeesh. ARs are confusing.

Some people will say the twist rate is different for the two calibers (it is). Go with a dedicated 22 upper and whatever else upper you choose. With some of the dedicated 22 uppers the barrel is recessed in and appears to be a short barrel but it's legal

I've only ever used my M261 conversion out to about 25 yards from my 1 in 7" twist M4gery. At that range it was plenty accurate. I've got a a 25 yard target with reduced torso targets representing 200, 250, 300 and 500 yards and was able to put hits on all of them with the conversion.

Only trouble is that the POI of a .22 is going to be different from 5.56 out of your barrel. I'm using an ACOG and have found that just between 400 and 500 meters on the bdc ladder and a little to the left works quite nicely with Remington bulk pack. So if you are trying to be accurate you'll want some kind of sighting system that either provides some extra points of reference you can use to aim with, or repeatable click adjustments.

now that is fantastic advice, wonderfull.

Thanks you guys, if the conversion is that accurate at 25 yards, which is most of what I do anyhow, I will just go with that.

Can always sell it and get the big dollar upper later on.

Wonderfull. thanks

What is the twist rate of your AR? Accuracy wise 1:7 is best for heavier bullets, 70 gr and up, so 1:9 would be better with lighter ones. The old M16s with 1:12 or 1:14 should be even better as you get down to 40 grains but such a slow twist is not so good for modern 5.56 ammo.

I have an M16A1 upper with the 1:12 twist and run it with a Spikes conversion. It is very accurate.

Thank you Quentin, this is what I was trying to remember. I use an old SP1 upper for my 22lr conversion.
