After years of disdain for the rifle platform we know as the AR15, I have crossed over to the dark side. I have a basic A4 style in 5.56mm. I'm thinking about a 300 Blackout. For ease of changing from one caliber to the other, I'm thinking of a complete upper. Anything else I should know ?

It will end up digging into your wallet. AR’s are magic. They make money disappear and various parts and pieces appear out of nowhere

I bought my first one maybe thirty years ago for a Prairie dog hunt. It has a Match grade barrel and is exceptionally accurate with hand loads. Not all are created equal

The .300 will cost more and it was designed around an 8 or 9 inch barrel iirc for subs what are you wanting it for?

If you are having 556 and 300 blackout in the same household, I would get 300 blackout specific magazines.

personally, I use pmags for 556 and Lancer 300 blackout magazines so they are different.

reason being is some ogives (bullet profiles) of 300 blackout will let a 300 blackout cartridge chamber and fire in a 556 upper and bad things happen.

That sounds like very good advice. I will definitely take it.

Welcome to the club. You will catch BRD (Black Rifle Disease) shortly. Oh and make sure that you keep any and all spare AR parts completely segregated and under lock and key. They seem to breed into full guns if left together.

And Yes I will also stress marking your 300 upper and magazines so that you don't accidentally shoot a 300 round in a 5.56 barrel. Bad things happen when you do that.

If you are going to use it for deer hunting try going to the 350 Legend, it has much more range than the blackout. It's a fast flat shooting heavy round that puts the knock down on deer & accepted as a legal hunting rifle in many states. And just snaps on your AR lower, it uses the same bolt but requires a 350 legend mag.

Possible deer hunting, but just the added versatility of another caliber.

Forget the 300blk and get a complete upper in 7.62x39 along with some X39 mags. I've had 300 blackout rifles and a pistol upper and (IMO) unless you're specifically shooting subs through it it will leave you wanting for something with more punch downrange and less punch to the wallet.

That could be an option, and I have a bit of ammo in that caliber already.

The great thing about the AR platform is the variety of ammo and the different configurations you can have for it. Sooo many options. Have fun.
