AR mags, latched in ?

Ok, I have an AK. When I slie the mags in, they latch into place. Same for all of my pistols.

My AR, on the other hand doesn't latch in until you chamber the first round. Proper, or is something wrong?
 
try giving the mag a good solid smack after you insert it.

Sometimes fully loaded mags are difficult to seat.
 
Concur. I always download by one (I know, I know, you don't have to do so) just to avoid this issue.

most often, a full mag inserted into the AR with bolt closed, will be difficult to seat. This is not a problem when the bolt is back, as in replacing a just spent mag.
I down load the ready use mag by one or two. The mags I carry for additional use are full.
 
Yes, everybody here has pretty well diagnosed the problem. With a full 30 rounds, the magazine may be difficult to seat with the bolt closed.

I was taught to slap the bottom of the mag to seat it and have since moved to the push-pull method (push magazine in until it clicks, pull down to insure it is seated), though I still revert to slapping it on occasion.

My method now is probably more like push magazine in until it clicks, pull magazine to insure it is seated, if magazine comes out slap it back in and beat on bottom of the mag like it said something bad about mom.
 
I have found that mags from different manufacturers behave differently in my Armalite. Most of mine just require some firm pressure to seat even fully loaded. A couple just pop right in, at least one or two require a slap.
 
Uncle Sam instructed me to lock the bolt to the rear (pull back charging handle while depressing the bottom of the bolt release lever, then return charging handle forward until it clicks) , insert the magazine authoritatively (should click in easily with the bolt to the rear) - a quick slap/tug verifies it is seated, and then release the bolt into battery with the bolt release lever. The only time a mag goes in with the bolt in battery is during a tactical reload. Here again, the slap/tug (or push/pull) verifies the mag is seated.
 
Push/pull is a good plan, but doesn't help if your mag just won't latch on a closed bolt. It just lets you know that you're SOL. Good mags will latch in my RRA on a closed bolt, no problem. Cheap ones almost never will.

Magpuls will make a good hard 'push' hurt your hand less.
 
Ok, you guys are psychic.

Now, to try this out and see if mags not totally loaded to 30 seat easily. They ARE good mags, aside from this one anomoly.
