Thinking about an AR, nothing special, one of the bargain bin CMMG's. Coworker bought one and I am impressed.

Question I have a choice between chrome lined 1/7 rifling and un-chromed lined 1/9. The chrome 1/7 is $50 more. Which would you choose?

I'd pay the $50 and get the chrome lined 1:7, although the other would probably be an OK rifle.

Get the chrome. Easier to clean, lasts longer, can shoot surplus heavy-bullet ammo, etc.

1:7 or 1:9 - depends on what you will want to shoot. 1:7 will allow you to shoot the 'heavier' bullets like 75gr. 1:9 works well for 55-69. However, your rifle may or may not like a certain bullet anyway. But generally speaking the 1:7 should digest the heavier rounds better.

My AR barrel is not chrome lined and honestly I don't know that it matters for recreational shooting. Others have said it may be easier to clean (although how hard is cleaning a barrel really?)

Either way, feedback on the bargain bin rifles has been pretty good lately.

Get the chrome...1-7 so you can shoot really heavy bullets...remember you cannot shoot really light bullets though!

Like JonB said... it really depends on what you want it to do.

I just ordered an AR kit set up specifically to shoot heavier grain bullets, so I went with a 1:7 twist chrome-lined barrel and M4 feed ramps.

I dont' forsee my ever shooting anything lighter than 55 grain in the rifle, and most of my shooting will be 62 grain and above in this rifle.

So, I'd go with 1:7 chrome-lined.

However, when deciding, you are really making two decisions-- twist and lined?

My personal choice is always chrome-lined in an AR for general use. If I needed EXCEPTIONAL accuracy, I may look to non-chrome-lined, or Stainless Steel. (I did Stainless Steel on my LR-308)

Then twist rate is more a factor on the weight of the bullet you'd like to be shooting. For shooting most surplus or 55 grain range rounds, 1:9 is fine.
