I want to change out the handguards on my AR with the style you can mount stuff on. In other words has the rails on it. What are the available styles and makers. Also what in you opinion is the best or worst??

That is similar to saying "I'm interested in mammals. Please list them and explain the differences."

This thread is a good place to get information to narrow down your search:

What type of rails best suits your need is going to depend on what you plan to use it for, what you can afford to spend, etc.

If you can define some of those, it is easier to present some options.

I am wanting it to mount a light or possible a vertical grip. The problem is when I start looking all of them look basically the same to me. I know Fobus makes one but not sure who else. I really only want to purchase one.

Billy,

The differences can be classified into 3 basic groups.

1. Rails that bolt onto your existing handguards. Cheap and not very stable.

2. Replacement handguards with the rails incorporated into them. These are the Fobus, Yankee Hill Mfg, and Surefire systems. I'm sure there are others as well. Materials may be plastic or aluminum. These are great to use to attach lights, vertical foregrips, etc... Attaching sights to these can be iffy due to the HG shifting. I know the surefire m73 system is designed to lock on and not move---a good platform for sights.

3. Free floating HG systems. These replace the HG, barrel nut, and HG retaining ring. These systems usually require the removal of the front sight base and any muzzel device to install. They are stable ( a good platform for mounting sights) and don't place any strain on the barrel when you rest them, or sling up, or whatever. These tend to be the most expensive, but you can find good systems for under $100 if you look (YHM, FRISH, etc...)

Hope that helps, feel free to ask if you need more info.

First Samco makes a set that will snap right into your existing hardware.
These are made out of the same material that the standard handguards are made from and feature four rails and internal heat shields.
This system also inludes the rubber covers for the slots you don't use.
These are very stable once in place, as a matter of fact,
Get a handguard installation/removal tool or you will need three grown men and a small boy to get the First Samce Handguards snapped into place.
Will cost you maybe $120.00 for the guards and the tool.
