Are these primers flattened?

I was working up my first 45 ACP load.
I am using Bullseye and 200 gr round nose bullets from Rainier.

I recently got a copy of the Reiniers loading data and it says that for 200 gr FN bullets the min charge is 4.0 gr and the max is 6.0 so I started loading at 5.0.

5.0 was ok
5.2 was snappy
5.4 was snappy and I got these primers so I stopped.



These are flat right?
I am using a SW 45 ACP revolver.

The last I heard, Rainer stopped issuing loading data. Unlike Berry's , Rainer suggests using lead data and not jacketed for their bullets. 5.0 might be a little stiff. I'd back it down at start at 4.0 grains. the case on the left doesn't look bad. the one on the right has a small amount of flow into the firing pin.

Might also be a bit too much crimp. With Rainer, you will pierce the plating easily with too much crimping.

Look fine to me, but my disclaimer is the way primers look is not always a reliable way of determining excessive pressure.

Since when I was using 4.8 or 5.0 in my Glock I was pretty happy, I guess I will not push it any more.

Them primers arn't flat, but still can be overloaded. A flat primer will loose the radius, and start filling the radius on the edge of the pocket.

Primers is not a good indicator of pressure !!

It`s an indicator of soft primers, of course there`s exceptions to the rule ,but for me if i`m in published loads & the chronograph agrees I roll on .

Every winchester primer I ever loaded or the factory stuff shows pressure present if ya go by "The Chart" in loadin manuals .

But then again ya have your gun in hand & I don`t so be comfortable & SAFE!!!!

While primers are not a good way to read pressure, as far as primers in .45 ACP loads go, those look just fine.

A somewhat slower powder such as W-231 may help the "snappy" part.

What are you looking for. Light target load? IDPA?

For a light load in my 6" 25-2 Model of 1950, a Berrys 185 Gr SWC @ 1.190 and 4.8 Grs of WST is very nice. (About 800ish FPS) Light, clean, & accurate. 4.9 Grs and a Berrys 185 Gr HBRN @ 1.260 is also nice. (Again, about 800ish FPS)

IDPA? Can't help.

These loads were safe in my pistol using my load technique. Check data, start low, and work up.

Primers look fine to me---but that's really a crapshoot for eyeballing overpressure.
Your loads look a tad hot. I shoot 200 gr Raniers over 5.0 grains of Bullseye- it's pretty much my go-to target .45 ACP load.
