Gang,

Armalite would like to know if we prefer our CZ pattern guns in metal or polymer. What does everying prefer? I said metal, but said I would ask the rest of the gang on the forums. For reference, here are pictures of Sarsilmaz's polymer and steel guns:

I will refrain from offering further comments on this issue so as not to influence anyone. I provided a few arguments for my preference. Thanks in advance for your replies!

I like both. The one thing I don't like is the chrome front sight which are harder to see. I have a daly dda that is the same way and I removed the chrome on the sight and cold blued it. They either need a dovetailed sight or a blued slide.

That's a tough one for me. The metal looks great and I usually prefer it on a pistol, but I'm sure that polymer would carry a lot better. I'm too indecisive to say at this point!

That looks to be another Tanfoglio/EAA Witness iteration. If the price were right, I'd be interested in a blued steel pistol, with Novak dovetail cuts, chambered in 10mm, .38 Super, or .357 SIG. No wrap-around rubber grips, please. Hmm, single action trigger would be nice, too.

Metal. Maybe you should have set this up as a poll. Really, there's something almost sacriligious about a CZ pattern gun with a polymer frame. In my view, if you're going to offer polymer frames, do it only with compact models that are suitable for concealed carry. Buyers of full size service pistols are, most times, going to want all metal.

And get rid of those blasted figergroove grips. YUCK! Uncle Mike's used to make some awesome rubber for CZ pattern guns, but I don't think they're available anymore. Still it might be possible to license the grip design and have somebody else make it. If I'm not mistaken UM licensed this design (and revolver boot grips) from Craig Speigal (sp?), made the grips for quite sometime and then had some sort of falling out with him and the licensing contract lapsed.

You are right, I should have made it a poll. I had a rushed question from them and wanted to get some feedback. Mark Westrom is on his way to Turkey to get some details ironed out and wanted some quick feedback on the materials issue.

I had a feeling metal would win out, but will stay mum a bit longer on what I said as I don't want to influence the outcome. Any of you that have followed my posts on this know I have been sending along a lot of input to Armalite on the project. I am trying hard to not hog their attention, rather to pass on what everyone seems to want. After all they are not making these guns just to please me. That would be okay if they wanted to though.

:D

PS: I am pretty sure the finger groove grips are DOA. Mark did not like them, and has already sent over a sample of something nice that I had suggested. I think you will be pleased Southpaw...

;)

Super. I'll be certain to check them out when they appear. If I like what I see, I'll walk away with one.

You know, I just noticed something. You might want to pass this along. I notice in the pictures that on one gun, both front and rear sights are either stainless or hard chromed. In the other picture, the front sight is chromed or stainless. This is extremely hard as far as sight acquisition. Might I suggest commonly available dovetails for both front and rear sights? This would make the gun a better sell, but they're going to have to consider cost here. It might be considerable more expensive to do it. Don't want to nitpick and if I like the gun, it won't be a really big factory.

They should probably offer them in both, if possible, but I agree that there seems to be little reason to offer yet another CZ clone, what with CZs becoming more widely available every day at decent prices.

The one advantage I could see would be a sub $300 retail price, and actual point-of-purchase prices below $250.

They probably could go a little higher than that. I rarely find NIB CZs for less than $400. The single CZ75 stainless I've seen sold quite readily for $500. The most frustrating thing is that few dealers carry them anymore. My area plays host to several large gunshows each year. Out of maybe 300-400 tables at these shows, only one dealer had CZs. A local guy used to carry just about everything CZ made. They sold, but not quickly enough for him and now he will only special order them. Last year he got a P-01 in and it sat for 3 months before somebody bought it. They're either not popular with the dealers or not popular with the people around here.

Under $300 and made of steel?

I'll take two... one for each hand. ( Or one for me and one for the wife. :D )

And yes, a dovetail front sight is a "must".

If it's gonna be a poly gun, I'll skip it and just buy another Glock though.

I agree with Southpaw. I see a dealer with a nice selection of CZs here regularly (of course being in Missouri CZ seems to have quite a few dealers that carry their guns), and he seems to move inventory slowly. I have noticed quite a bit more interest in these pattern guns in recent months though, at least online and based on the emails I get with questions about them. I suspect the time may be ripe for agressive moves by makers for several reasons. The end of the AWB made the hi-cap models (CZ, EAA) a better option due to mag availability. EAA's move of basing everything on the large frame exploits that nicely by offering an 18 shot 9mm and a 15 shot 40 standard. EAA and CZ have interesting new models well suited to competition, and some aftermarket parts makers are supporting those with sights, holsters, etc. Eric, Angus, and other competition shooters are getting attention and that promotes the guns. There have also been good deals out there on the guns. EAA was dumping their AWB era and 2005 model guns to clear the way for the new models and guns with full-cap magazines. For a time this will suppress prices, but that should end. The new guns also have features the old inventory lack (higher capacity magazines, accessory rails, Novak style sights, bull barrels), so that should entice customers.

This last point is where Armalite is focussing. They will offer guns with options you don't get in a base CZ or EAA, at about the same price as a base CZ. Forged slide/frame, adjustable sights (also probably Novak style), checkering, hard chrome, excellent trigger, and other options yet to be determined. At least that is where Mark Westrom wants to go with the line. Stay tuned and I will do what I can to keep you posted so long as my nosing into the project continues to be welcomed.

:)

As it has been pro bono, I hope they find the price for my services hard to argue with.

I have nothing against polymer guns; but the polyer frames on the CZ clones look atrocious.

The stainless version looks great, but it definitely needs a black front site.

Armalite would like to know if we prefer our CZ pattern guns in metal or polymer.

if armalite wants to sell me a pistol, the pistol will be:
- steel
- chambered to 40 s&w
- have a mag cap of 14 or more w/ flush mags
- have steel mags readily available for a street price of $25 or under

Metal for me, but forget "CZ pattern guns". There is only one "CZ pattern gun" I'd ever buy and that is the CZ.

You and me both. After Armalite gets these guns here and they are moving, I will visit the 10mm issue with them as best I can. I have already proposed it and do have access to some sales numbers from another gun maker to support the market value of the caliber. I will say Armalite is receptive to the idea of multiple calibers so we can keep our fingers crossed.

A 10mm version would be enough to get me to purchase the gun, if the price was significantly less than a good used Glock 20. I like a steel 10mm.

Stainless Steel, 10mm, 15+1
Sounds good to me. I wish they could be made without a manual safety and have a decocking mechanism instead...I think sig style would be very popular but now we're getting into real changes :D
