I have the chance to pick up an Armalite M15A2 Service Model (20" barrel, and standard non-collapsible stock) from an acquaintance of mine who is a police armorer for $700. Less than 300 rounds through it. Comes with everything including box. He said he would throw in a couple of 30 rd. mags too. Is this a fair price? Is this a good gun to start building and learning off of? I will want to change out some of the stuff on it for sure. Any info would be wonderful!

Thank you!

Here is the website for the model

Sounds like a good deal.

It probably has a standard trigger, so that's a good place to start part-swappng. But, if you just want to shoot a while before deciding what to swap, you can improve the trigger cheap. Google "15 minute trigger job" and check some of the answers. I've got one that's so nice, I almost prefer it to my other gun with the Rock River match trigger.

Well I am new to AR's, and it looks like it has a fixed carry handle and flash suppressor, so what fun is that to try and upgrade?

700 dollars for a lightly used AR from a reputable maker is a good deal.

Once you get the lower reciever, just change out uppers if you want a different style.

That rifle typically retails for $930-$1000. Armalites are wonderful rifles, and it is an awesome company to deal with. It's definitely a good deal.

There are many good AR's out there, but I have an affection for the lion and crosshairs logo.

Considering how dated this thread is now, I hope that you've enjoyed your rifle. If I had the money, I'd probably get one myself. Remember, AR stands for Armalite Rifle!
