A Brentwood couple was held at gunpoint by three armed men wearing ski masks last night who robbed them of cash, weapons and other valuables, Suffolk County police said.

Suffolk County police said the 9:32 p.m. robbery at 5 Lee Ave. does not fit the pattern of a string of home invasion robberies this year that resulted in the formation last month of a joint task force, consisting of officers from Nassau and Suffolk, as well as from Brooklyn and Queens, to combat the problem.

There have been at least 30 home invasions in Nassau so far this year, almost twice as many as in 2004. Prior to last night's incident, 17 were reported in Suffolk.

Suffolk County Third Squad detectives were investigating the incident in Brentwood.

I find this really disturbing, since I live in NYC, where the criminals have more rights then law abiding citizens. There have already been 30 home invasions, and I'm worried it can spread to Brooklyn or Queens. I do not own a gun and have no military or police training, and have never fired one. I'm 16 and can't own a gun. I'm really interested in fire arms though and want to get into shooting when I'm older.
So my questions for you guys are:

-What type of weapon would be ideal for home defense.?
-Would it be wise to engage 3 enemies, possibly armed, with no prior training? What would you guys do in a home invasion situation?

Thirty “home invasions” doesn’t seem that high, do they mean (30) armed invasions or just (30) run of the mill break ins?

Hockey, stay safe out there.

I would think the primary weapon would be a cell phone and running shoes if 16 and unarmed. Maybe a baton and some pepper spray but I would not want to stay and hedgehog.

Can you get some unarmed training in? Maybe a Brazilian Jiujitsu gym around?

A prepared mind. Beyond that, the best HD tool is highly dependent on your specific situation and preferences. For instance, you probably don't want to use a high-powered rifle if you live in a sheetrock-walled apartment complex. There's too much danger of penetrating the walls and hitting innocent people.
-Would it be wise to engage 3 enemies, possibly armed, with no prior training?
Absolutely not. If you intend to get armed, get trained.
What would you guys do in a home invasion situation?
Again, highly dependent on the situation. If I could do so safely, I'd probably get myself and my family outside of the house. Not macho, but it could save a lot of grief. If I'm cornered, I'd head for the saferoom and activate Plan B.

I'm asking these questions hypothetically. I am in no immediate danger since I live and a good neighborhood. Plus this is happening in another county.

It's just that when I'm older I want to get into shooting. And if I even own a house and have a family, I want to know what options there are. What type of training can one recieve if they weren't in the military or police?

Some of these towns are in the home district of Long Islands favorite gun grabber Representative Carolyn McCarthy.
