I walked past an Army recruiting station and decided to go in and ask the recruiter a question about joining the reserves when I noticed the "no weapons or firearms on federal property" sign (the office was in a strip mall). I was CCing my 1911, so for the interest of national security I remained outside until the recruiter noticed me through the window and came outside to talk. I felt really silly talking to the soldier as people where passing us on the sidewalk but I noticed he didn't invite me in either. Perhaps he understood because he was accustomed to talking other people who didn't come inside because of the sign.

Federal law prohibits personally owned weapons in office space owned or leased by the federal government.

Probably the same rules as a military base.
I have been on some bases that allow weapons, but they had to stay in the car or in your home. Diffrent rules for diffrent localities.

Hasn't anyone ever told you???

Phisics has proved that it is scientifically impossible for a speeding bullet to hit you or anyone around you while standing on federally owned property. Therefore, you will NEVER need a firearm to defend yourself while there, because a psychopath will not be able to come inside. If they managed to, their firearm would be automatically rendered useless...and so will their knives or clubs, or any weapon for that matter (including their fists).

So, next time, just leave your firearm in your unattended car in the middle of a parking lot protected by a thin layer of glass, and RUN (preferably in a zig zag pattern) to the safe federal property office.

What Kharn said but also:

Perhaps he understood because he was accustomed to talking other people who didn't come inside because of the sign.

He probably had no clue you were armed and likely would not have cared if you were carrying a Tommy gun if you had agreed to come inside and sit down and talk to him. Might have even been a conversation starter... "young man I see you like guns, let me tell you the Army has losts of guns..."

Lots of interested but reluctant recruits stop and read some of the material posted outside and try to screw up enough courage to go and talk to the recruiter. It is no different than talking to high pressure used car salesman, another activity most people dread.

My middle son Mark is a SSG in the Army and currently on recruiting duty. I asked him about this and he said that the recruiter most likely saw you standing outside and decided to walk out and do a little prospecting. Recruiters spend part of their day walking around malls and other public places just engaging people who appear to meet the criteria for enlistment in conversations. He obviously saw you looking in, reading the posters and thought he'd engage you in conversation to gauge your interest. He most likely never heard of someone not coming in because of the no weapons sign.
