There has never been outright confiscation in this country, as we have seen in Commonwealth countries, for instance.

And should the government decide to enact a policy of outright confiscation, pursuant to the 5th Amendment, they'd have to pay gun owners the fair value of each gun confiscated.

Not that it's any consolation, but it certainly serves as a fairly strong deterrent (among others) against confiscation.
